Article Attached - 3G Cellular Shutdown in 2022, and car make and models affected.

Ford has some sort of a not really a recall, but a customer service thing, where the customer buys the modem and Ford pays the labor. To say it is confusing is a giant understatement. The letter people receive looks just like a regular recall one so they, and a lot of people here, assume Ford pays the whole thing. Its been fun.... 😐
How much is the updated modem?

Interesting article attached. Seems there are several makes and models that have current use features that will be affected.

Cliff notes version is that T-Mobile will be shutting down 3G network in January of 2022, and ATT will cease 3G operation in February of 2022.

Verizon is still keeping their 3G CDMA 1x-EVDO network on life support until 12/31/22 I think. Too many alarm systems and telematics are still on Verizon cellular communicators.

I think some GM OnStar systems are still on Verizon 3G, perhaps Mercedes Mayday(now called M-Brace). Maybe the Koreans too - given CDMA was big in Korea and both LG/Samsung were major phone vendors to KDDI/SK Telecom as well as Verizon and Sprint, not shocked if there’s a LG modem for Hyundai BlueLink/Kia UVO with a Qualcomm 3G CDMA modem locked to either Verizon or Sprint 3G.

If owners are interested in keeping subscriptions up especially recent modes the car maker can pony up a new module and and update. Alternatively they should refund the entire amount an owner has paid for a the service.

My wife would be irate on her Tiguan she almost bit on paying for the service but found out it was next year gave a remote start.

I find it strange that VAG, BMW, Porsce all made the list but Mercedes did not. Is this an oversight, or do you actually get what you pay for sometimes? Not that any of those others are inexpesive, but it makes me wonder.
Depends on the implementation at the time. Mercedes probably didn't have features which relied on the technology. My 4-series has 3G and the only thing of value that I've lost is real-time traffic. The other features I've lost are web-browsing and concierge service. Not a deal breaker for me.

Onstar claims the system in my 2015 Chevrolet has already been updated with a behind-the-scenes OTA update and I should see no interruption of service. We shall see.

I find it funny that my 2015 is [supposedly] all set with an OTA update by Onstar, yet 2018-2022 GM vehicles might have issues with an OTA update and need dealer intervention to resolve the problem.

This will all come up again in the future when the 4G LTE networks shutdown...and then again when the 5G networks shut down...and on and on and on.
