Are there any (other) folks that won't...

I used to shop at Wal-Mart when Sam Walton was alive, but the company had a different philosophy back then. Perhaps once every 4-5 months I actually stop at one of the Wal-Marts in my area, and I quickly discover why I no longer shop there.

The employees are rude, and customer service is a foreign concept. Ask an employee where something is located results in an answer such as "I think it's over there" with a vague arm gesture. Many of the employees have loads of tattoos and piercings, both of which I find disgusting. It's clear that Wal-Mart attracts the lowest of the low for many of their store employees. Compare that to a local grocery chain where everyone greets you, and if you need help finding a product someone will take you to the product to make certain you find what you need. The employees of the local chain are clean cut with a shirt/tie dress code for employees. The employees of the local chain are paid a decent wage, and it's not uncommon to see "25 years of service" or more on their name tags.

Prices aren't that great at Wal-Mart-especially for grocery items. Many items in Wal-Mart are actually higher than our local grocery chain if you look at price unit price of the same product. Wal-Mart has a lot of slightly smaller packages that make it appear that their prices are lower, but if you look at the unit price it's the same or higher than the local chain. There are a number of items that I purchase from Amazon.com that are a lot cheaper than Wal-Mart (laundry soap for example).

Our local chain uses the Nu-Val scoring system. It's a great way to make sure you're getting better nutrition. I've never heard of Wal-Mart using Nu-Val.

Our local grocery chain has department employees that actually know about the products in their department. Ask someone in wine and spirits about a specific product and they'll usually know about it. Ask someone at the meat counter for a specialty cut and they'll do it for no additional charge.

True, the local grocery chain doesn't carry tires, electronics or small appliances. But if I want any of those products there are better places than Wal-Mart to purchase them too.

For me it's all about cost and one-stop shopping. WalMart gets a lot of my business. The biggest downside is the low-life element that's there. But even that can be entertaining.

If I shop at Walmart it has to be on my day off early in the morning as I will not go there after 9 AM. I stopped off at a Walmart Supercenter on the way home from Key Largo (FL City) and the place was jammed packed at 2 AM, every register open and 5 customers waiting in each line.

Walmart is just like any retail job out there.

I have no problem with Walmart. We get most of our non perishable grocerys at Walmart. Also things like dog food, oil and minor car stuff, and bathroom supplies. I really don't care about customer service, we know where everything is and we go in and get it. As long as we avoid the busiest part of the day then its usually a pretty quick trip.

For fresh produce and perishables, we go to the local farmers market. For meats, we go to the local meat market. We found that Walmart is lacking in these areas.

I shop where I can get the item I want at the best price. If that's WalMart, then they get my money.

99% of the time I go shopping I know exactly what I'm looking for and don't need to deal with anyone but the cashier before I leave.

I am a trader, I am a capitalist. My money leaves my hands in trade when I feel that I am getting the best possible deal for me. We all have a somewhat unspoken moral obligation to vote with our wallets each time we go out and trade currency for goods and services If we do not put thought into how our money is spent and what we are getting in return for that money, then we are doing ourselves and our free market a dis-service, however, one is certainly free to not think if they so choose. Sometimes the lowest price is not always the best deal. As many people have pointed out and experienced, local grocers that have a dedicated and professional staff often sell goods at prices that are very competitive with wal-mart. Some wal-marts seem to have very good staffs while others are "getting what they pay for" if you know what I mean. My Wife and I shopped wal-mart for many years but decided to go give the local chain a try again about a year ago and haven't looked back for produce/meat/bakery items. The prices are all very similar and when we wait for sales the meat is routinely cheaper for a better cut/grade/%%% etc. When I have to buy Motor Oil, I happily go back to wal-mart for their amazing 5qt jug pricing that can not be beat anywhere in town. If I'm feeling especially cheap, I'll grab a few super-tech filters while I'm there. Around here, there is no better place to trade currency for motor oil, wind-shield wipers, anti-freeze, window-washer fluid, floor mats, etc etc etc. On a given day, I can go to walmart and know with confidence that their best oil price is at least %25 lower than the best deal running at the national chain car-part stores. I remember back when I turned 16 and got my first car, buying 5qt ST jugs for ~$4.

The only problem I have with our Walmart is the dang location! It's a pain to get in and out of there unless you go shopping anytime after midnight.

I don't routinely shop except for food. I get a better one stop shopping at a regional chain. When we do have cause to do some shopping ..something like a major hygiene supply run (shampoo, toothpaste, etc..etc.), then I'll tag along and survey the oil aisle.

While I can't imagine having a "WallMart routine" habit ..I don't think that I've stepped inside a mall for over a decade ..so they're actually late on my lists of places that I find have little purpose other than soaking up revenue. I keep seeing cart load after cart load of plastic that never needed to be made rolling out of the place. Everywhere I look ..all around is plastic.

I find it very hard to be there.

While Walmart is becoming more and more a necessity for more and more ..I really thought that they should simply have a sign outside, in bold neon, SHOPPING JUNKIES - YOUR FIX IS HERE.

I really think that a large segment of the population has a whole night or two where they really don't need to shop ..but use(d) it as a distraction. As though they had some depression that only felt relieved when they bought something.

Could someone give an example of a "local chain" store. I hope it is not like Publix, Albertson's, Winn-Dixie or Food Lion.

I shop at Walmart only once in a while because they are kind of far away and they don't run deals like the local grocery chains like Safeway or Nob Hills do, or are they within walking distance like Target is.

My main problem with Walmart is that they don't go on heavy discount, and I only buy on heavy discount. They tends to also carry stuff that I normally don't use (other than a few items like soaps, detergents, shampoo, or toilet paper). Their oil are never sold cheap compare to Kragen on discount (other than that one time when Quaker State Q Horsepower were $8 after rebate).

But you have to admit that they, and many stores like Ikea, Target or Safeway, are efficient though. They do a lot of stuff in CRM that tracks consumer pattern and automate processes that reduce waste, and get to where they are today. Beating the suppliers hard? They aren't the only one, Target, Home Depot, and every single American big box stores are the same in that.

When all else being equal, Walmart are too crowed for my liking and I usually shop closer to home to save time instead of the 30c cheaper that Walmart sells for.

Ok,,was at Advance Auto: Pennzoil synthetic 5qt and filter: 24.99, same for quaker state Q. Conventional Pennzoil 5qts, is 15.99 includes filter, Fram. Mobil 1 synthetic 5qts and Mobil 1 filter is 27.99 and the extended oil is 29.99 5qts and mobil filter. There are several other good deals to on oil

I try to support the Wal-Mart and the Schnuck's store equally.

(Schnuck's is a regional supermarket chain out of St. Louis)

Here's an example, Schnuck's doesn't have motor oil and filters.... and Wal*Mart doesn't have meat or produce that is worth eating.

So, I patronize both of them...

Ditto on the meat at Walmart. That's what my wife says when we have a cut of meat that's tough or something. "It came from Walmart!"
So what's the alternative? The local Piggly Wiggly store has great meat but it's always full of folks that stand around and talk about God knows what! Kind of like a meeting place for most shoppers. One thing in their favor is that you can always get checked out quick! No standing in line for more than a couple minutes as they have a cashier at every register.

The other choice for grocery shopping is a Kroger store. For the life of me, I will never understand Kroger's selling practice of the Kroger Card! You save money if you have one and they scan it. But they also have one that they can scan if you don't have one. Why not sell the products at the lower price to begin with? Seems stupid to me.

As for Walmart, I don't go there unless I absolutely have too.
The only other choice we have is to drive 50 miles plus to get to a Target or Kmart.

But I believe in keeping my money in the local market as all the local businesses are staffed with local people.

Yes, but now they stock about half what they used to, I may start somewhere I think is more likely to have all I need.

With the recent Wal-Mart redesign of their stores, it is almost pleasant to shop there. They have also started staffing more checkout lanes so the wait to pay for your items is now less than the half hour we used to experience before.

As a result, we go to Wal-Mart once a month or so.

Walmart isn't the end all be all. Get better prices on shampoo etc at big lots. In a way big lots is the "new" Walmart. Something like generic antacid will be cheaper at BL or even the dollar store... and it's all the same. One has to be vigilant as it's the small stuff that gets you. (A $4 rubbermaid dishwashing pan is $1 elsewhere.)

Though I don't like it, I rotate between it and other supermarkets for one stop shopping, important with two little kids getting loaded in the cart, car seats etc. Manage to stop at a "real" local supermarket as part of the commute for the 20% Walmart is incompetent at.

For meat, BJs Wholesale has delicious chicken for cheap. Some stores will simply decide ALL of one category (meat, produce etc) will be expensive. Then a sale on hamburger means 8 buns are $3. One has to shop around.
