Are synths actually better than conventionals?

All good points, and that's why I joined this site. Having been an avid backyard mechanic I always want to learn more. I have extended OCI's changed filter brands and continue to learn all because of this site and its knowledgeable members. Like I mentioned in my previous post "Insurance", people buy umbrella policies and carry higher limits to protect themselves and for peace of mind. I guess the same can be said for synthetic oil..

I think synthetics are overhyped. I've seen plenty of used oil analysis that show dinos producing better wear numbers than synthetics and vise versa.

However, people should use whatever they feel comfortable with.
 
I generally only use synthetic when conditions require. Right now I am using M1 because of the -48 pour point right now, and it has paid off with -40 unaided starts and the fact my engine doesn't sound like a box of marbles dumped on a hardwood floor until it warms up below -20 like it did with conventional Pennzoil.

My answer is MY opinion based on fact you do not have to belive it or read it.

Most all PCMO's are a blened of GPII and GPIII now days a vague question like is a syn better gets a vague answer.

Like everything there are exsceptions to everyting but in general syns are basicly dino now days and even if all GPII they they if made right are as good as a "syn".

Better at what?
Temp extremes? Probably. I'll give two examples. Extreme cold. I apologize; I meant E X TR E M E COLD. Like WELL below freezing cold. In this case, a group III, IV, or V will pump a bit easier, getting up to pressure a bit sooner. However, zero degress-F and a conventional 5-30 can still get along quite well. Or, look at extreme heat. By extreme, I mean WELL past the designed operating temps for the application. Example: I have had the misfortune of having two of my vehciles overheated from failed cooling systems. My wife's van (water pump) and my father's Taurus (freeze plug). Both went into the red zone and were driven way farther than they should have been before shut down. My Taurus coked up the rings (see oil additive thread by me) because it was on conventional oil. The van, however, didn't coke up; it was running on synthetic (PP at the time, IIRC). Subsequent compression tests conducted showed that the synthetic tolerated the extreme temp better. BUT - IF YOUR ENGINE NEVER SEES THESE EXTREMES, THEN "SYNTHS" ARE NOT NEEDED! I don't believe it's fair to blame a conventional oil for failure when unrelated mechanical failure was the root cause. Had the Taurus been pulled over immediately, there likely would have not been any ring coking. So the answer here is a Syn might be "better", but only if you allow some undesirable condition to occur. If not, then a conventional oil will do just fine.

Wear Protection? Probably not. There are many, many used oil analysis that show good wear results with "conventional" oils. The thing about wear protection is that it is always a matter of changing ANY oil before contamination, oxidation, insolubles and such degrade the oil to a point of ill-advised continued use. I want to be careful in my description of wear protection here. I mean to say that an engine/oil combination that is studied in long term statistical analysis using consistent used oil analysis and looking at ranges and trends. Anyone can show a one-time post where brand X performed better than brand Y or brand Z, but these are meaningless unless the variables are controlled. Too many people use a single UOA as justification to use or reject an oil. Too many people here hop-scotch from one brand to another, with the misunderstanding of how used oil analysis should be used.

Lasting longer? Probably so. Here is where "synthetics" really shine. They can take the environment for a longer period of exposure. If you run long OCI's, use premium filtration, and used oil analysis, and drive many miles a year, then SYN's are probably a good fiscal decision. But if you can't mentally get over the hump of the 3 month/3k mile OCI, and/or you only drive 10k miles a year or less, then Syn's benefits are not realized. Period.

So is it right to choose a synthetic over a conventional? It depends on the appliation. My 1966 Mustang which is used for summertime Sunday cruising, for a total of 500 miles a year, DOES NOT qualify for synthetic in my fleet. Nor does my rototiller, or other low-use, limited extreme equipment.

However, my wife's van (previously noted risk!), my truck (winter 4x4 and summer towing of travel-trailer) do see greater risk and/or length of OCI service, so I choose the advantage of synthetics.

There is no right or wrong answer; there is an appropriate answer for each vehicle, in a specified environment, with a recognized risk level.


One of the best thought out and written comments on this subject that I have read, and I totally agree with dnewton3 on this issue.

Look at how many syn oil used oil analysis are posted .Not many are extended. I recycle my used oil. .the amount of motor oil being used is a drop in the bucket as compared to the gasoline used. I can agree about the time saved when extending oil change intervals 'cept as mentioned not many syn users do extend their oil change intervals.
 
I have seen a work many engines run "with a coolant leak" overheated untill the valve seats drop out. .Repair the head and the motor is good to go . The oil doesn't get that hot. in those situations.
 
Shoot, I love working on my Truck including changing the oil. I actually look forward to hitting that 3k mark so I can dump the oil and replace the old oil and filter. I take all the recycled oil to the recycle center and I'm done. I have to do this dance every six weeks or so but Dino have been fine for me.

The debate will rage on forever I am sure!

Like Badlees mentioned, I to love working on my car and changing the oil. I dont know if I could go 15K on amsoil even though I want to try to do it, I would be going nuts because I would want to change it out just to go through the motions. I guess I could drain it out into a clean pan and then just pour it back in to give myself the satisfaction of doing an "oil change"

For you fans of non-synthetics, what oils would you use in a 2003 VW GTI 1.8T and what OCI would you use? Assume it's out of warranty.

this will always be a contentious and debateable subject

IMHO the following issues are quite clear

ENGINES (lubricants)

1 - Many engines are developed from the drawing board using synthetic lubricants (Groups 3,4,5) and using lessor lubricants will undoubtably have an adverse effect on their operation in one or many ways. The use of synthetics at this level has been going on in some Euro engine maker's development shops for two decades or more!
I would NOT like to operate a twin turbo V8 Porsche Cayenne on anything less than a synthetic 0w-40 lubricant for instance!

2 - The fantastic engine life we can get today from almost any engine is due to the Oil Industry being forced into developing lubricants to match emerging technologies and environmental concerns. Mineral lubricants have benefited from the development of various "synthetic' fluids and the technology needed to produce them
In the case of Euro engines the ACEA forced the Oil Industry into action. In the US it was the heavy diesel engines makers that forced the issue in the mid 1980s

3 - In my quite extensive experience on the matter I believe that very few if any mineral engine lubricants will allow for the same extended OCIs that are possible with the latest synthetic lubricants. In my case this has been by a factor of about four times the service life for a synthetic over mineral lubricants that meet the same operational specification (say CI-4/SL)

4 - With Euro engines the use of what may be known to some as "extended OCI" service plans (normal to the maker) by their manufacturer are primarily dependent on synthetic lubricants

5 - In markets where lubricants are expensive such as here in Australia the move to a longer lubricant service life by the manufacturer is accompanied by a move to a synthetic lubricant

6 - Many viscosities of the lubricants we know and accept today would not be possibel in a mineral form. This would mean seasonal changes and other unwelcome consequences of these viscosities not being available

It is interesting to note that many modern Group 3 synthetic lubricants perform at least as well as older formulation Group 4,5 "boutique" synthetic lubricants

TRANSMISSIONS (Drive line)
In an overall sense the move to synthetic drive line lubricants has enabled a much better service life of all of the components involved
It is possible that some auto transmssions (such as Porsche Tiptronics) would not have near the service life on a simple mineral lubricant
The lifetime fill is well known and in the Trucking Industry 1m kms OCIs for gearboxes and differentials are now a realistic expectation. The same GL4 and GL5 synthetic lubricants can be purchased "off the shelf" for use in cars. Emotionally most car owners (especially BITOG owners) still change it out every couple of years or so. Mineral GL4 or GL5 lubricants would be very hard pressed to have such a 1m OCI

Overall however I believe that Bruce is correct - if you don't NEED a synthetic to meet the manufacturer's lubricant specification for the engine or for warranty purposes then using a synthetic lubricant is probably a waste of money!

I`ve been using Mobil 1 15W50 for about 3 years and now I`m considering getting the 4 quart jug of Valvoline Premium Blue 15W40 and 1 quart of Valvoline conventional 20W50 (my car hold 4 1/2 quarts of oil w/filter change and I haven`t seen the 15W40 in 5 quart jugs,only 4 and the quart of 20W50 I`ll use for the 1/2 quart).
 
The only thing that used oil analysis don't address is deposit control. They're all aimed at wear and contamination. However the deposit control dept is one area where synthetics may be superior. And as you said, it still depends on the application and the conditions.
