are reground crank clearances same as manufactur?

I've never seen material added to a crank for regrinding (unless they are increasing the stroke, or hard chroming for other stuff)...that's why they make undersized bearings.

Dude, they spray weld cranks all the time to bring them back up to standard diameter.

With .20 over on the block plus whatever the crank was ground under you could have some large clearances to make up.
It sounds like slightly loose bearings, the only way to check it at this point is plastiguage or disassemble it and use an inside/outside micrometer.
Check the factory specs for the correct clearence.

It would always be better if rod ends were resized/honed w/fresh crank.

Some times a cold piston knock may irritate you until the piston warms up.

I have heard a iron exhaust mani. leak that sounded just like a rod knock and would go away warmed. Gaskets eliminate this.

For a stock engine regrinding is fine. That is why they make bearings of different sizes. You grind .010 .010 then you use bearings for that spec. I bet what you are hearing is a slight piston slap. Most machine shops do a standard bore and slap the pistons in and let it go. When I built my 383 we boared it slightly under .030 then mic each piston and hone each cylinder to fit each piston perfectly then file fit the rings so each cylinder has perfect clearance. This was all done in a friends shop and not a generic machine shop. If you have a piston or two that is ever so slightly to small for the cylinder you will get piston slap untill the piston expands from heat. This is what happened to some GM engines when they went away from "select build" and switched to "net build" in 1998. They have recently gone back to "select build" and from what i understand no longer have the piston slap issue. Our 07 2500HD and my 07 5.3 Yukon have no piston slap at all.

I know that it's done, but I've never seen it for a "standard" rebuild bottom end
