Are all Dextron 2 tranny fluids

interchangable?

Had my transmission serviced just 5k miles ago, but have a very minor leak in the seal at the floor shifter and if need be, will add some more ATF fluid.

Problem is, on the paper work they just simply stated having used Dexron 2 transmission fluid.

Can I add just ANY Dexron 2 fluid into what's already in there, or are there compatible issues I should be aware of?

If they used Dexron II they used VERY OLD fluid. Dexron III replaced Dexron II in 1992 or 1993, which is when GM stopped issuing Dexron II licenses. This means that the fluid they put in your transmission is potentially thirteen years old.

Well, fwiw, transmission shifts REALLY smooth for a 155k transmission that's had a working life.

Truck is a '97 Isuzu with the 4L30-E GM transmission.

So, are you telling me that I can mix Dexron 3 with Dexron 2 and be ok??

Yes. I would think it would be hard to even find Dexron II fluid since it hasn't been made in over a dozen years.

Found a problem, here, owners manual calls for Dexron 3; Haynes manual calls for Dexron 2.

Shop has used Dexron 2 on two different ATF fluid change intervals over the course of 50k - have not experienced any problems, but would like to know what I can put in the transmission and whether or not it's compatible with Dexron 2?

On this side of the pond some higher-end lubricants has the Dexron II mark in place for being "recommended". One of them is the Mobil's ATF SHC.

I think the issue here might be the Dexron III+ fluids zinc additive limits. Actually I've been using Dexron III in my older GM for seven years and observed a higher noise, so I'm thinking of returning back to a quality Dexron-II for a try. II and III are supposed to be fully compatible/mixable.

The only case I know of there Dexron-III is not suitable for an application calling for Dexron-II ATF is in older Hondas. In that case, Honda ATF-Z1 is needed.

There is no real Dexron-II on the market. GM issues licenses for Dexron ATFs, and they only license Dexron-III(H), the newest version. I don't know about ExxonMobil's marketing of other countries.

Correct. But the thing to remember is that the cessation of licensing doesn't prevent oil companies from continuing to produce their previously licensed formulas. This is why you still see ATF+3 on the shelves 7 years after Chrysler went with ATF+4. We may very well see companies continue to offer Dex III along with Dex VI even though GM says the latter is fully backwards compatible with all previous Dexron applications.

You should probably just check w/ the shop and find out if maybe it's not a type or their just using a code in the computer that's really old, or the person changing just didn't write what the used correctly.

If they did really in fact use Dex. II, then I can't imagine why they wouldn't make it right if their a quality shop and put in Dex. III like your manual calls for.

Check first though...I'd think it's unlikely they really used Dex. II.
