What difference would it make if it's bought in person?
You can see for yourself what type of care it's had. If a person only changed oil twice in 100,000 miles, there is a good chance other things were neglected as well besides oil. How much can you tell from photographs and descriptions, over a personal, hands on inspection?

Even if you're not knowledgeable on cars, you have the ability to bring along someone who is. Buying anything well used, sight unseen is never a wise idea. Over having the ability to check it out in person.

Even if they give you a 30 day return period, or whatever, it's far easier to walk away before you buy it, than it is going through all the hassle of trying to get them to take it back and refund your money.

Most sellers will prepare a car for sale whether selling online or in person by at least cleaning it up and changing the oil so you cant really tell that it was neglected even in person unless it's something very obvious. Now if you're talking about a 3 picture ad with a 2 line description, sure, better look at it first. But the cars I've bought online I haven't found any major unmentioned issues, and of all the ones I've sold sight unseen I've not gotten any complaints.
