The problem is you bought a netbook. You can also get an I3 laptop for 300$ or so.. that wouldn't have your issue.

I have an asus with I3, 4GB ram,240GB SSD for 350$ and a spare 500GB 2.5" hdd.

they have had in the past.. refurb i7 thinkpads w/SSD in the 350$ range too.

MacBookPro, the one that comes with SSD instead of HDD.

While getting an old PPC iMac updated at an Apple store, I got to talking to their rep. He mentioned this re: the new iMacs. Said Apple had abandonned modular construction. When it broke or you wanted to add RAM, etc., it had to be returned to be updated! I was rather amazed at this. I lifted one up and they're much lighter than the two older iMacs I have....MUCH lighter.

Apple may no longer be shipping them with mechanical HD's and Ram extensions may now be done externally, vs internally. I don't know. Haven't looked any of this up. They may even be seeing a DT as a digital dinasaur, particularly given how many use tablets or even phones, especially kids.

As for Apple vs. MS, I've now watched this debate from the beginning. I remember CP/M, working on mainframes, and OS/2 WARP. I own both. Still using a 13" blackbook from 07? 08? that I rescued from being disassembled when the neighbors kid dropped it off his bed one-too-many-times. All it needed was a new HD and the dog hair vac'd off the MB and out of the fans. Even found a used battery that'll hold a charge for $5. I plan on re-celling it and the dead pack. OS X is easy to use.

On the other side, finally enjoying having W7 since last Fall. Quite an update from XP which I've used for more than a decade. Dealing with the Dell SFF Optiplex PS issue mentioned in an earlier thread reminded me of typical Dell HW problems.

For those that bash Apple, I'd add you can't even buy a new PS for the above Dell. All I found were "used", and that HW is from 2011. Yet they continue to sell pallet-loads of these things as they come off-lease and label them "refurbished" (which is truly meaningless...) and sell them to unsuspecting customers. Now that's nuts! I never realized this was a serious consequence of their SFF machines. I won't ever make that mistake again. Caveat Emptor!

This is the first change in system requirements Apple has made since 10.8(Mountain Lion) and at that it's not terribly dramatic.

So far, I've been able to install DP1 on one "unsupported" system(Macbook 5,2, mid-2009) and it will run on my MBP 4,1(early '08, pre-unibody).

The only computer I care about that I personally own that's "out" is my Mac Pro 1,1. It has lasted long past its expiration date, though-it's 10 years old this year, and given Apple's current support cycles will be receiving security updates until at least 2018 under El Capitan. The "Clovertown" CPUs in my Mac Pro don't support some of the needed instructions for Sierra.

BTW, my main computer is a mid-2012 Macbook Pro 9,1. This is the last of the non-Retina 15" models-it has the high resolution matte(anti-glare) screen. I wouldn't trade it for anything newer for the screen alone. I have a 1TB Samsung Evo SSD in the computer along with 16gb of RAM. The computer flies.
