API SQ Coming Soon...

The rules are that as of the last day of March they need to be using the SQ labels.
Why ? Is this API's rule ? Why can't Mobil or Castrol or whoever just continue marketing their oil as "SP" (even if it is SQ) ? Seems odd that they are "required" to sell or market a particular spec oil.

That’s a common practice. It allows for a sell down period of about six months for old stock with old labels to disappear from store shelves.
The same thing happened with Dexos when they went from gen 2 to gen 3. For a while you could find gen 2 combined with API SP instead of SN+ on the labels.

I should’ve phrased that differently. I meant that after the end of March that’s when they are allowed to start using the SQ labels, and most of them probably will.

Pennzoil Platinum, Platinum High Mileage, and Gold have updated data sheets for API SQ. No updates for their other oils yet.

The specs on the data sheets all seem to be identical to the old ones, so it doesn't seem like these oils have been reformulated at all.

Ah, that makes sense. This way no one can get a head start on the "marketing" side. I guess API thinks Joe Consumer buying oil at Walmart or Autozone really care a lot about this !! 😂

My newest car -
“Be sure that the engine oil you use comes under the quality classification of SE, SF, SG, SH, SJ or SL.”
My wife has a '24 Toyota and it doesn't specify API at all. It specs some Japanese GLV standard. My older Infiniti only specs conventional API SJ, maybe SL, though that was recent enough when that VQ engine was developed, I suppose.

I just got in two boxes of Mobil 1 FS and the date code indicates February 2025 production. My personal guess is we will see SQ in July.

I just replaced the oil in the Rav4 Hybrid with M1 Hybrid with API SP. As long as it exceeded the SN designation of the vehicle I'm cool.

SQ is available now in Australia, YZJB just bought some Valvoline.

How will SQ help my twin solar turbo Mitsubishi Sport?

I am guessing SQ will simply be an update of the SP.formula or a "tweak". It will be the same theme of LSPI, increased detergency and chainwear.
