Anyone using Redline MTL in a M5OD manual tranny?

I am thinking of using MTL in mine ('95 F150). It specs Mercon ATF and I have used Redline D4 which is 7.5 cSt. I understand that MTL at 10.5 cSt will improve shifting and would like to try it, but these transmissions also are said to have splash lubed bearing that can burn up if too thick a fluid is used. So if anyone has run MTL in one of these trannies for a long time with success, let me know. I don't need to change out for another 10,000 miles. Just thinking ahead.

Cold dino ATF is MUCH thicker than warm/hot MTL.
So maybe you shouldn't use ATF?

True, but cold dino should warm up in a relatively short time. It may be prolonged hot operation where the bearing damage happened. But you do have a point.

The other thing is that Redlines brochure on MTL says it your manual tranny specs ATF, then use D4.

Actually, I have Specialty Formulations Syncroglide tranny lube in it right now. Now, if I could find out the 100C viscosity of Syncroglide.

I just run the regular Dexron III stuff in my M50D (91 Ranger) Im going to change it out soon. Prolly run synthetic with a touch of syncromesh or something.

Going off of memory....it is in the low 9's cSt.

You may be right. I was reluctant to go the full 10.5 of MTL and the 9 seemed a good compromise. Well, it didn't help shifting much over the Redline D4, but certainly was not worse than with the 7.5 cSt D4. Maybe a mix of MTL and D4 next time.

Wonder if it has GL-4 level antiwear like Redline.

Yep, it does. Pablo I went around on this a few months ago before I put it in. It should come up on search of this forum. Also, look in the Trans UOA section.

Mola, always good to see you!

Well, I'll have to print this out and file it with my maintenance records so I can find it when I need it. Looks like I could go several ways:

Specialty Formulations, which may be up and running at that time (about a year)

Mix Redline MTL with D4 for a viscosity around 9-10.

Amsoil.

Thanks all.
