davzog,

I think your oil weight is fine. Try us a synthetic oil in 5w30 and see what happens.

If MPG is your thing I'd do other thing first to see how to gain mileage like: 1. check your tires for proper pressure
2. wash and wax your truck
3. keep the air filter clean
4. keep your foot as light on the pedal as possible
5. engine tune
6. try a different brand of gas
7. cover your open bed or put downthe tail gate

All you can do is try it and see aht happens. On my 01' Durango V-8 with it's 25 gallon tank it can take me from L. A. to Arizona if I drive carefully and be light on the gas pedal. I consider that to be fantastic for a V-8 using a synthetic oil in 5w30 weight.

Might a 0w30 be a better choice???

I am currently using 5w30 PP.....

Any suggestions??

What type of driving do you do? If you are taking very short trips, you may benefit slightly by switching to a 0W20 like Amsoil ASM for example. However, it won't really do anything for your highway mileage, since the difference between the hot running viscosity of a 20 and a 30 weight is negligible.

However, you should see some improvement with a 0W20 over a 5W30 under very short trip service, especially in the winter. Amsoil's 0W20 has a 40C viscosity in the 40's (45 cSt, something around there - off the top of my head), whereas most 5W30 will be higher (like mid 60's at 40C). If the oil temp doesn't get any higher than 40-60C on a short trip, then it's worth a try.

On my mother's 2002 Chev Venture (3.4L V6), I switched it over to 0W20 in the winter since she does many 1-2 mile trips throughout the day. There have been no ill effects as of yet, and it's been many winters with 0W20 (back to 0W30 or 0W40 in the summer - depending on how much towing I do).

But I wouldn't switch if you do a lot of highway. Stick to the 0W30 or 5W30's if that's the case.
