I don't care if it's a showroom fresh '98 S10: I see zero reason to source and install a reman'd 2.2. Those engines are bulletproof, and READILY available from salvage yards nationwide.
My vote: buy a $500 used engine as complete as possible, degrease and power wash upon arrival, refresh said engine with new gaskets/plugs/timing set etc while on the stand. Then drop it in. You've now got 80% of a "reman" engine for 1/3 the cost.
