i prepay but I don't enter into a contractual agreement. It's totally goodwill between me and the oil man. His wife is the real funky one with the "gamble" lock in. I prepay and he makes sure I get the lowest price as he can offer. Last year her contract would have cost me money ..even though I was already $1800 to the good before the first delivery.
Excuse my ignorance (we don't use heating oil down here) but how much does it cost per year in heating oil for you guys that live up North ? How many times during winter do they have to fill up your oil tanks ?
Down here we got the A/C running 365 days cause there is no winter where I live.

I go through about 900gallons a year. That includes hot water. I've got a 2 1/2 story 100 year old house to heat. I have steam, so it's pretty inefficient in the transitional phases. It takes a long time to saturate the system ..and then have that heat hit the thermostat. Hence you'll run for maybe an hour ..and then you've built up so much thermal output ..that you over shoot the thermostat ..which then sends the boiler idle for several hours. Repeat.
This is when you may have 50-60 days and 40F nights.
Now when you're solid into cold temps 24/7 ..then it's pretty good. The boiler just runs for about 3 or 4 minutes every 20-30minutes. It stays close to boiling and cycles are more uniform and change slowly.
This year I expect about $4000 in total costs.
