Hello and what is everyones thoughts on bulk oil that you would get at firestone, dealerships, jiffy lube, etc? I can get some 5qt jugs of Kendall Synblend in 5w30 or 5w20 if I bring the jugs to my friend at Firestone. Just wondering if you guys like the bulk oil you get at places or if you prefer buying your own at wal mart, advance auto, napa or autozone. I dont see a problem with bulk oil as long as the shop/s have a good tank to hold it in.

thanks in advance

I buy jugs on sale. Used to work at a Jiffy Lube. That was 20 years ago. Not sure if they have tank filtration yet. Plus the truck would just come in and top the tanks off. Makes me think about moisture removal from the tanks. Unless they are kidney looping and monitoring their supply I'd stay away. Yeah I'm nuts!

I don't have a problem with it.

I have bulk Toyota 0w-20 synthetic in my car right now.

Yeah, I would use our S-K ECO POWER 5w30 at my work if they would let me. I dont think anything is wrong with bulk oil.

The way I see it, the biggest problem with bulk oil is that so many independent shops have one tank and use that for almost every car that rolls in. There isn't anything wrong with using bulk oils as such, but it can easily lead to using inappropriate oil for the application.

We get bulk oil at my work delivered from Lube Tech for our fleet. (Just their cheap house brand dino)

Our gas vehicles (Mostly Ford vans and Rangers) get 10w30 that comes in 55 gallon drums and 5K OCIs.

For our diesel trucks we have a 200 gallon bulk tank of 15w40, and they get 10K OCIs.

Our fleet racks up over a million miles a year, and very few of these vehicles have less than 200K on them with some being over 400K. Never had any problems with these oils.

I buy 5 individually packaged quarts of Kendall GT-1 5W20 synblend from my distributor at $18.50. What would your source be charging?

If I was confident that the bulk oil was what the source said it was and it was significantly less expensive, I wouldn't have a problem with purchasing it. But...

Well the stuff is Kendall synblend cause that is what Firestone's use. I would be getting it for 1.50 or so less than what I would pay at autozone. Peturbs me that there arent other distributors in the Pittsburgh PA area that carry Kendall oil.

At work we have a bulk oil take for Chevron 5-30, everything else is quart bottles 5-20, 10-30, Chevron Supreme, 5-20, 5-30 and 10-30 Chevron/ Havoline Synthetic's and gallons of Delo 15-40. For gearoil 80-90 LS and Artic 75-90 in 16 gallon drums and five gallon jugs of Synthetic gear oil 75-90. With ATF we only use quarts, we used to buy some 5 gallons but it costs more than quarts.

Do you HAVE to use Kendall ?? Because if not, every month there is at least one decent deal to be had , whether its synblend, full syn or conventional. Have you tried Motorcraft Oil ? Its made by the same parent company as Kendall , and has a similar add pack sans the Ti additive. (Think there might be some Boron in there too though ). Ive heard truck stops usually have Kendall oil for a very good price too.

Thanks Bourne, and yeah at 40-52ish for a case, think I will go with the MC 5w20 synblend since I can get it at wal mart for like 18$ a 5qt jug. Plan to run it 6-7k in the Civic. May just use QS or PYB as used QSGB before to 6k without issues.

Bulk tanks for car engine oil are not used in Germany, they are only allowed to use a 50 ltr drum with tap, although most use 20 ltr plastic cans on their sides that are fitted with taps. Not much chance of debris or contamination, but there have been some law suits in the US and one in the UK over incorrect drum labels (Citgo case in the US). They were selling GTX 10/40 as Edge in one case, which should be half the price, so I stopped using anything in bulk although a UOA would have picked that one up easily.
A lot of EU Iffy lube places are next to a parts shop, so you can buy your own oil or brake parts for them to use and be fairly sure about what is being used. They will also order up the expensive manufacturers oil & filter if requested.

Too many engines ruined with bulk oil in a tank. You never really know what your getting.....out of spec old oil mixed with new????

Someone has got to be using the PCMO that don't pass the PQIA tests. In a tight economy, people look to cut corners to make a profit.

Not read of any bulk oil failures as such, as the Citgo case did involve an OK but cheaper oil. It was more of a fraud problem than an engine one.
The top up bottles scam that effects US convenience stores is bad because folks that suddenly find they are low on oil might buy something nasty, as the shops concerned did not stock other brands in some cases.
The situation in the EU is different only because the equivalent of the convenience stores is a Franchise and to avoid potential problems they only allowed to stock brands of oil or parts associated with the service station they are part of. The nasty thing is they charge an arm and a leg for one litre in comparison with a car parts shop or good Online store.
The Internet oil scams are all just small scale and normally involve some dipstick who has collected disguarded major brand cans from some refuse tip, cleaned them up and filled them with oil from some bulk tank. Only buy from a fully registered company site and look at their Ebay history as the ones I have seen were very limited or had just been set up. Ebay shut these accounts down fairly quickly and Paypal also respond, but you won't get a refund without difficulty from Ebay and the chances of your claiming for any associated damage from the oil, if they used something silly to fill the cans is close to nil.

Why not spend a couple dollars more and grab QSUD and run full 7500 miles on the oci.

I get my oil changed at VIOC for $18 with coupon. The Nissan gets Valvoline Bulk.

I add some moly, zinc, and some esters...and those additions cost me about $10 more bucks.

I run it for 7k miles. First UOA coming after this OCI.

Bourne, I have a jug of QS syn 0w20 and two jugs of PP 5W20. I may run the 0W20 QS SYN this winter to 8-9k. Brother runs that in his 03' acura tl without issues.

Is your "friend" at Firestone doing it off the books?

I have used about 4-5 different Firestone locations and all of them are adamant about not using any outside customer brought in product.
