Anyone going to NAIAS in Detroit?

Having lived in the metro Detroit area for many (27) years, it never ceases to amaze me how the media has portrayed that city. Granted, it's now nearly broke and the neighborhoods are all but abandoned (many are), but most of the suburban locals don't give a thought to attending events in downtown Detroit. The downtown is, in fact quite nice...and quite safe. It's still the place you go to see a sporting event, see a play, hear the symphony or visit a museum. Detroit still has a lot going for it but decades of flight by residents and businesses have left it devastated. I never missed an auto show when I lived there and if possible will arrange to see this one too...always a good time followed by dinner at Greektown or Mexican town on the southwest side (the best!). I'd be more nervous on the south side of Chicago (gang violence) or Washington DC (anywhere) than Detroit. From my experience, the people most willing to poke jabs at "unsafe" Detroit have probably never been there.

I think I'm going for the first time in probably 3-4 years. I also don't feel unsafe there, when I go. I have never run into anyone super sketch even outside Cobo hall.

You dont need one! Its a major event, not an afterparty in a shady night club with thugs. The atmosphere is very safe, much event staff and it really is all about the cars. I appreciate these events very much. And you can enjoy it whether you are actually comparing like cars and are actually looking to buy ANY car (to compare the competition and ask questions and sit in the car,) or just to drool at the Lambos. Both are legitimate, and anything in between.

Same here. Just substitute "NAIAS in Detroit" with Jacob Javits in NYC. Thats what I attend. Again, first time in 4 years.

Though it's been a while, I've been to the NAIAS twice (back then, I think it was just called the Detroit Auto Show). It was back in the '90s, but safety was just fine. Wish I was in the position to go again, but have to settle for the Charlotte Auto Show in November.

I'm going, likely on MLK day. I'll get some pics, and pick up any pamphlets, etc. Where is the display usually located?

P.S. The area around COBO hall is probably one of the safest in the city. As already mentioned, Downtown is not dangerous at all. Anything remotely close to Ford Field, Comerica Park, Joe Louis Arena, Wayne State University, is quite safe. Plus, the Detroit Formula 1 race track used to pass right in front of COBO hall

And then you've got Belle Isle, which is hosting Indy Car & GrandAm Rolex cars this year and the next few. Honestly, Detroit is an awesome place to go. I've lived in and around it my whole life. You want a bad area? Forget downtown... you won't find it there (suburbs are another story).

I'll pass. I'm not going to the Auto Show this year. There aren't many new products out there that I want to see this year that thrill me.

However, I do make a point to go to Autorama every year.

Don't worry about safety in Detroit, as long as you stick to the main public areas.

I'll be there! Park for free at Greektown Casino and take the People Mover.

I agree totally with oilmaven's comments. My wife and I visit Detroit several times annually to catch special events, museums, etc..

Last year ALL of my pictures turned out like this. Darned distractions

I went 2 years ago on a high school field trip for shop class. The downtown city area is a safe place.

The show was awesome and had alot of cool things to check out. hey were really pushing the electric cars that year with their "electric avenue" section.
Id like to go again this year...we will see

Bullet-proof vest? Wow, real original from someone who's never been here I'm sure.

Somebody just watched the "this represents Detroit" movie "8 Mile" with Eminem, im sure. People from Detroit know that thats not the only road of that type in the Motor City.. you have Six Mile road, etc etc..

Thanks! I don't know where in the hall the display is. And I've actually found out that the tire will be available in the size I'm interested in, but I'd still love some more information about this tire. From the small photos I've seen, I can't get a good idea if it's truly an asymmetrical tire or a directional tire (or even both). If you could take some closer pictures of the tire on the display stand, I'd love to see some better resolution photos than the small ones in the press releases.

Just silly, my son lived downtown for 2 years recently in a realy nice flat overlooking Comerica park, never a single issue. There are single girls out walking there dogs, families going to sporting events and thousands of people working downtown every day.

Stay to the greater downtown area and you are just fine. However there are neighborhoods to stay out of even if armed!
