bingo!

gave him.

He has two kids and needed transportation. We had no need for the van and to sell it would have been more trouble than it was worth.
He will never get another vehicle from us....I can assure you.

i find it funny that these young kids clean their car but dont change their oil...why bother with cleaning car as well?

i clean my car occasionally but inside of car would be cluttered if not for cleaning fanatic filipino wife..i bet my engines are spotless though inside...my focus looks brand new under oil cap w/ 46k

That's no kid, that's an irresponsible adult.

I do it only if I am helping the owner out. I find something else wrong and I voluntarily fix it. Then they give me a tip for being so nice. At work whenever I am working on a truck I randomly will check fluids belts and tires as a curtesy. Because of that the truckers also spread a word of my good nature, and I get tips.

Any thoughts?

That really is classic OCD. The guy means well, and his intentions and acts are a welcome relief from all the jerks out there, but he's being way too invasive. Asking is one thing, but checking a private vehicle w/o permission (much less adding oil) is far outside the realm of respectable action.

Checking up on a company car is OK in my book, although I suspect that most large firms would disagree. ("We don't pay you to do that, return to your cubicle immediately!")

That said, he and the the Castrol Dipstick dude would make an AWESOME pair. The people responsible for these horror stories (and their long suffering vehicles) would benefit greatly from a firm smack on the rear!

I would be furious if I found someone mucking around with my car.

Of course it's more than properly cared for so the OP's buddy wouldn't be there in the first place.

Way too invasive and creepy, IMO. He's crossed a line of property and privacy that could lead to other (worse) things.

You are 100% correct. I used the wrong word to describe him....but the right one for his actions. I also am careful not to offend my girlfriend who's son this is. But in truth, he's a fool.

The original guy we are talking about would not touch a guys normal car especially a BITOG type guys car. Only "needy cars" which are probably ones owned by people who seem like they would not take care of them. Like the "sister's cars" I have been reading about on BITOG. I know he is still wrong to do it though as he probably does too.

If I ever sneaked a peak at someone's oil level, and found it critically low, and got caught and chastised about it for not asking permission, I'd punch that guy in the face until I saw blood from his nose..... then I'd ask "really? are you serious?"

It's usually people coming up and asking if I could check their oil, because most do not know how. Never let anybody down, but I also recommend checking all the other fluids....and they're happy with that.

Having said that, a while ago a friend of mine was leaving the parking lot of a Starbucks we met at. As she was pulling out, I could hear the power steering whine like crazy, so I just went "Wow, wow, wow...hold your horses! Open the hood!" It was then I discovered her power steering hose was leaking and it was low on fluid. Add some Mercon I had with me, and sorted out the hose. Had I not noticed, a new PS pump was in her future.

You guys are offended if someone pops open your hood w/o your permission because the typical Bitog guy already takes cares of his car and treats his car as a member of the family. Many car owners are not like this. I do this for people I know well (family, gf's, etc) and they don't mind at all. They do not maintain their car and appreciate it when someone else does it for them. Think about it from that perspective. Some of these people don't even know how to open their hood, how can you expect them to check the oil level
