OK, first off Im not a huge speeder by any means, but I often find myself 5 MPH or so over the limit, and often times I dont slow down from it. Ive never been pulled over from it, however, even though it is often past police officers. Anyone else experience this? Also, how exactly do cops determine if they are going to pull someone over for 5-10 over? Thanks!

I swear sometimes its the need for a ticket quota or they have an "issue" with the color and kind of car (discrimination).I have seen plenty of vehicles speed past cops and they never went after them.

From what I hear, cops won't pull you over unless you're doing 15 mph over the limit on the highway, here in Michigan. In town, they'll pull you over for going 10 over.

Well, out here in S. Cal FWY if you drive anywhere near the speed limit of 65mph you're likely to get run over or rear ended.

With that being said, IMO "profiling" has a lot to do w/ who gets the ticket. Just this morning I was cruising 75 mph in middle lane & a pack of 3-4 cars passed me doing 80+ with a red BMW 5 series leading the pack.

About 1 mile down the road I saw that Red BMW pulled over by CHP.

I know the CHP came out from behind because we just passed an on-ramp, instead of taking the easiest target which should have been the last car he chose the red bimmer probably due to its color & tinted windows.

To answer your questions, technically I got away with speeding as I was 10 mph over limit. But almost "nobody" drive speed limit out here in S. Cal especially on FWY.

Here in Central Virginia (presume statewide) it is a regular affair to speed 10+ over and going 20 over is, in my experience, not unusual. I run 70 on the highway to work and I am certainly one of the slower movers. People in Virginia could really care less what the speed limit is from what I have witnessed. Careless, reckless behavior from many of them. They get away with it because I rarely see State Troopers on the 30 miles of interstate I typically travel to work and back.

Actually, it is quite legal in most states to profile a vehicle. Cops still need probable cause to pull you over, but I guarantee 10MPH over in a minivan is not the same thing as 10MPH over in a sports car. The sports car will get pulled over 10x more often.

On most roads they give you a little cushion, but never in school zones! Never, never speed in school zones.

I've only been pulled over for speeding twice, I think. One was a school zone where I just forgot. The other was where some old lady complained to the city that she wanted traffic slowed down, so the officers camped out on a particular spot and pulled everyone over and dolled out the tickets.

most places, +5mph, they aren't gonna say anything, unless you are doing something else too.
they're gonna look for the guy FLYING past the rest of the traffic.

around here, Ohio recently raised the speed limits on certain stretches of interstate from 65, to 70mph.
the Highway Patrol (state police) went on record as saying they've let folks have a 5mph cushion on top of the 65mph limit. but the sections where it's now 70, no cushion, 70 is the limit, anything over they'll stop you.

They said that when we went to 75 years ago. Now everyone drives 90. Seriously.

In greater Toronto you can usually do 50kmh in a 40, 80kmh in a 60, 100kmh in an 80, and easily 120-130 in 100 zone

wait...there are speed limits around toronto?? even on the 401??

I can remember when i was a kid, on a vacation fishing trip with dad, we were going over 90MPH, in our van towing a boat, and getting passed like we were standing still...

In town i try not to exceed 5 over, on the interstate no more than 10 over as a rule of thumb, When you see the law, slow down to the actual speed limit and show some respect.. alot of the time if your speeding and a cop gets behind you and you show the respect of slowing to the speed limit, that will be the end of it (assuming your not slowing from 90mph in a 55mph zone)

Also, owning a flashy car gets more than the girls attention

I have. But I got a ticket anyway.

Back in 1986 when 55mph was the law of the land, I was clocked and pulled over doing 89mph on I-15 south of Butte, MT.

The state trooper had me get out of my car and told me to sit in the front passenger seat of his patrol car; the radar display read 89 (ok, I'm hosed

) .

He then asked me if I had ever been pulled over for speeding in Montana. I told him "no" and he proceeded to explain to me how Montana flips the bird in Carter's face.

At the time, exceeding the posted 55mph speed limit was considered not a moving violation but a violation of abusing natural resources. It's a $5 fine, I pay the officer and my ticket is my receipt.

However, it WAS a moving violation if you got pulled over at night.

I set cruise at 10 over when I've got my kids with me. If I'm alone I like to stretch the hemi's legs a bit. Governor is set at 120mph or so,and there's lots of pedal left.
Time for a tuner........
