anyone drive for Lyft or Uber?

my neighbor drives for Uber and seems to be happy and successful at it. I bet that the driver you talked to who was upside down on his car loan would still be upside down with a car loan even without Uber. Uber has no customer service - I tried to use them last Friday for the first time and had nothing but problems; and apparently the Windows phone version of their app has no "help" link. I submitted three questions to their FB page and two directly and have not heard back from them. I know that they are well-liked, especially among the younger crowd - but after getting burned by them and with NO customer support I will not try them again.

I just paid $5.67 to get a ride on Uber (15 minute ride, maybe 3-4 miles) in a BMW 5 series!

Granted it had 170k miles, but it sure seems like a losing proposition...

Unfortunately (fortunately for Travis) people are driving for Uber and making a poverty wage. A part-time $12 an hour job is much better than driving some strangers you never met before.

It can be fun BECAUSE you never met them before. Not always, but there are some interesting folks out there. They open up to you while driving, which can be good, but it's almost always a party. Who doesn't like parties once in a while? Uber stinks as a way to make money, especially full time, but its usually fun.

Lots of business involve strangers you never met before. I get some in my business, not only do I sometimes drive them around, sometimes I don't make anything at all because they never end up buying a house. But it's pretty decent when they do.

You're not making peanuts when you sell property.

You also don't drive at night and pick strangers up in unfamiliar neighborhoods for a few bucks.

Technically Uber drivers aren't picking up complete strangers. Uber knows who the passengers are. It seems like it's more likely for an Uber driver to assault a passenger than a passenger assault a driver. But I think some drivers have got video of them being assaulted by drunk passengers.

I do know one taxi cab driver who showed me his bullet hole scars, he got shot a few times but managed to survive of course. He stopped doing it a long time ago. He said they never caught the guy.

Those are not jobs to retire early on, that is for sure.

Probably makes sense in the short term for folks whose bills have gotten away from them and they have no options to work longer for more pay at their regular gig.

Taxi driver has always been a low paying gig. Taxi fares have come down with the introduction of Uber and others. They can not possibly pay good wages to their drivers.

They did ok, but they typically had to work 12 hour shifts. Plus fares are fixed by the city but people taking them have gone down. I think Uber drivers can just work the most profitable shifts. I think the real money at the time was in the medallions which the city limited so they could go for 200-300k so it was the owners of them who did well and the drivers took most of the risks because they had to pay the rental fee and their profits were from tips and if they were busy enough. Now the market for those have collapsed, down to 100k or maybe even less, at least in my city. And lots of cab drivers have become Uber drivers if that tells you anything.

I did that for ten years, my wife did it for seven. Unlike Uber, we also were carrying cash and credit card numbers! I wound up in Harlem at 1am once...that was not much fun.

I think it's a lot nicer there now a days. Lots of redevelopment going on etc...

Who says you have to drive at night? You can drive when and where you want. Sure, the nutty full-timers will be out there at night though. Not us casual drivers. I just turn the app on during errands a little each week and get the miles deducted off my income taxes. Easy times only.

I thought the big money was at night when all the drunks get out and surge pricing was in effect. Of course there's also the risk of a drunk vomiting in the car, but I guess the good drivers have puke bags ready for that.

This was maybe 2003...it wasn't that nice!

3 of my brother's actually drive for Lyft as a main source of income and do just fine. Like others have said, not going to make tons of money doing it but they are all doing well. I personally wouldn't do it, but to each their own.
