"A neat technical tip is, when possible, always fill new oil filters with oil to prevent starvation on start-up,"

I fill the new filter on my truck about 2/3 full with oil before installing it. It mounts on a slight angle but is not enough to leak out when putting the new filter on. Can't do it on my girlfriend's Honda Accord, the filter mounts horizontally.

There have been many threads about this over the years.

I don't think it's been proven that the brief period of oil starvation is a real problem, so many people don't do it because they see no reason to spend the effort.

Many others do it, myself included, either to avoid dry-start noise or because it can't hurt.

Some people do it because they really think it is preventing harm.

on cars/trucks that mount the filter vertically or at a slight angle I do it.

if its less than a 45degree angle I pass.

I've been filling the filters prior to installation since reading about it here at BITOG. Never thought of it before.

Can't hurt.

Usually put some in and then swirl it around. Cant do it with cartridge filters though.

Can you fill the filter with oil as clean as it comes out of the filter? That's what you're doing, filling the outlet side. Oil there goes directly into the engine bearings. Oil poured into the engine via the oil fill tube goes to the sump, then the filter, and finally to the bearings.

If there is any chance of any dirt particles bigger than that which the filter takes out getting into your new filter, then don't fill the filter with oil. The engine has plenty of oil on the bearings for an easy start until the oil pump fills the filter and sends the new oil on into the bearings.

Been doing it for 30 years.

i have bin filing the filter with oil ever cence i read it in a populur meckanics back in the 80/s i like the oil presure coming up faster in my cars and truks

Yes I have been pre-filling filters since I was in high school. I'm not sure where I got the idea from.

I've never filled the filter to install it. Some of them its just plain impossible to do(horizontal installed filters like a 4.0L Jeep). Juice gets to it fast enough, specially since there is enough residual in the engine to keep it safe.

Always add oil to filter. On horizontal mounted filters I add oil, and wait for it to soak the media a bit, then a little more, and start threading on quickly to not spill any. Works every time.

Unfiltered > no oil, imo. What do people (who cry about "unfiltered oil") do when they assemble an engine, or change cams or valve jobs, or anything else? They must have elaborate filtering systems overhead in their garages, positive pressure filtered air... etc.

Probably just a feel good move, but doesn't it?

I'd like to but can't as mine goes in sideways. The oil would run out and make a mess.

I always clean the housing, lube the rubber ring with new oil, and screw the new filter on.
