Whatever you do you must realize that police protection usually comes in the form of filling out paperwork later.

I thought op was in the states. Can't carry a pistol but a good knife is a safe bet. I think a taser is a no no here as well. When I was young my buddy got one but I think he obtained it less than legally.
Go to YouTube, type in home invasions,many are caught on video cams, some are quit chilling, you will change your mind about being armed at all times, just watch a few of those videos...
I'd definitely carry on my commute. Trouble is, my employer does not allow any firearms on company property...including the parking lot.
All it would take is some jerk at work that had an axe to grind against you...and a phone call to the guard...then you are terminated.
Wish I could because some nights (I work 2nd shift) the scumbags are at a few street corners and behind the wheel as well.

Yes, I do. Could the op drive away? Says he was at intersection, first car in line? Pull out maybe in front of traffic? Second car in line? You're stuck. There are too many nut jobs out there that think they can get away anything now a days. I wonder what the motorcycle guy would've done with barrel pointed at him? "Judged by 12 rather than carried by 6."

Yeah, I saw the TV show called FBI Files where thugs were doing home invasions posing as Cops and were finally caught.

I had a run in with a motorcyclist this morning. He successfully did a high speed lane change in front of me, (only successful since I had to slam on my breaks to avoid hitting him). I proceeded to lay on my horn since he was blocking the only road out of the downtown core. This upset him.

Anyone else carry a weapon? My dad used to have a tire iron he had on the back passenger seat. He never had to use it (as he was always the "safe and slow" driver in his Volvo wagon) but it was nice to know it was there
After this run in, I'm seriously considering installing one of those dash cams. At least it will be able to record all the unbiased info.

The biker never would have reached my passenger door, even if I had to plow his bike out of the way. Too bad for him, because my goal is to go home at night. This comes from 27 years of carrying daily.
But for your question, being armed without adequate training is asking for trouble. If you decide to carry, and if it's legal in your area, you need to be all in with the idea. No hesitations.

My wife keeps a knife in her car. It has a glass breaker on the end. If she needed to use it and couldn't open the blade, the glass breaker could hurt if getting hit on the skull.
I consider the vehicle I'm driving in a nice 4,000+ lb. weapon. It can shoot straight, and around corners. If it misses it can back up and start over. It's driver is licensed, and the vehicle is registered, and insured. I try to avoid conflicts at all costs, but it is there if I need it.

15 miles from New Orleans, for 6 years they had the highest murder rate in the US. They also have a very low rate at solving the murders. You hear atleast one a month a body washed up on the beach.

In some states in the US like Texas it is legal to carry loaded firearm in your car because the law views your car as extension of your home. In other states it requires a carry permit to carry loaded in your car. Successfully using a firearm and lethal force while in a car or around a car is a serious challenge. Attempting to do so without serious training and practice can be extremely difficult.
Using a firearm with lethal force (even with lots of training and practice) can still go badly wrong in so many ways. At a minimum any altercation where you use your weapon is going to cost you significant time and money and that is if everything goes well. If it does not go well you may end up injured, dead, arrested, on trial, in jail, etc. The good guys do not always win.
Using a firearm should be reserved for when you are backed into a corner, afraid for you life, and have absolutely no ability to avoid or diffuse the situation. At that point it is worth the hassle and risk to yourself and others to use the firearm to defend yourself.
Best policy while driving (whether you are armed or not) is to absolutely never engage with any another driver. You have no idea what kind of low life crazy person with nothing to lose that you are engaging. Most of the time you will seriously regret engaging in any kind of altercation when you could just have ignored it. If at all possible just ignore the d-bag driving behavior and go on your way. Engaging means you bring that person into your life and that is usually a potentially very bad move.

I started carrying a gun in the car on trips when my son( now 22) was a baby in a car seat. I was worried about being carjacked with him strapped in the backseat. I started carrying then, i would have fought it out rather than let someone drive away with him in the car. I carried open carry , later concealed carry was available. I do carry on trips and now in public more that i have in the past.

Maybe better you didn't, if you had shot a guy who broke the window of your car instead of just driving away I doubt you'd be sleeping at home anytime soon.

I would have drawn on him if he was inside the passenger compartment of my vehicle. And if he did not retreat, he might have been shot.
