Anybody try burning waste FS oil in home furnace?

I did when I lived home with my parents, they had oil heat. Granted synthetic oil was different from the offerings we have today. A few shops in the area still burn it for heat.

All the molecules are the same size, so it gives an even heat. Synthetic oil - the product that just keeps giving.

NOT very.

"Waste oil heaters" use a very different architecture of the entire burner unit, than one used for "Home heating oil" (which is basically just red diesel)

Used motor oil in very small percentages would be fine, but the pump and atomizer designed to use No.2 heating oil will NOT handle used engine oil in large percentages because it is just way too thick.

I would imagine it would also clog the nozzle and burn dirty in a hurry. Not to mention it'll clog up the tank filter (and pump screen if equipped, I know my Beckett burner does) quicker, over time they get dirty with just N2 heating oil. I'm still cleaning up the mess the previous owners of the place I'm in...

Yep. It doesn't seem worth the trouble and potential issues to fool with the amount of used oil that a regular person generates. I hate tossing anything but I haven't found a use for used oil so it goes to Advance Auto.

Done carefully and in moderation and you will be fine.

I've been doing this for years w/ the cars in my sig, I generate a lot of used oil in the late Fall before the cars hibernate. I am careful about keeping the drained oil clean (keep the waste oil pan clean when not in use, etc.). A few gallons mixed in a 275 gallon tank over the heating season wont hurt anything. We have our heater serviced each year and have never had a problem.

I don't burn the airplane oil though....suspended lead.

I wouldn't use it in a home furnace unless I centrifuged it and even then I wouldn't mix in much.

A barn heater or salamander - go to town.

This has to be the wittiest post of the day if not the month.
