Anybody know about sulfonates and salicylates?

Was doing some oil research, and they mention that sludging and/or deposits are likely caused by asphaltenes, and that calcium alkyl sulfonates and calcium alkyl salicylates have significant asphaltene dispersant characteristics, and that salicylate is better than sulfonate.

What is each one, and is there any way to tell which compound an oil uses? Not necessarily from the SDS, since we all know those are very generic, but maybe adding certain chemicals to get a reaction that would tell the difference?

It is possible to tell which compounds are in a formulation but to do a forensics analysis is expensive.

The sulfonates and salicylates each have their place in specific formulations and their applications.

Thanks Mola, is there a "common" form of each one of those compounds so we can know what is what, or do these only exist in oil formulations rather than available by themselves? I'm not talking about frankenbrewing, just wondering what purpose they serve other than dispersion.

If you mean by 'common' are they available off-the-shelf the answer is no.
