Was doing some oil research, and they mention that sludging and/or deposits are likely caused by asphaltenes, and that calcium alkyl sulfonates and calcium alkyl salicylates have significant asphaltene dispersant characteristics, and that salicylate is better than sulfonate.
What is each one, and is there any way to tell which compound an oil uses? Not necessarily from the SDS, since we all know those are very generic, but maybe adding certain chemicals to get a reaction that would tell the difference?
