Merle Haggard is one of those country stars who proves if you can sing less than a single handful of music notes you can still make major dollars. He isn't alone with his " singing ability"- there are others. Probably the latest one is Scotty McCreery.
When it came out there was a video of an interview with his sister. I wish I could find it again. He sang the song to her over the phone, they were both crying by the end.
