Any idea what you spend a month on gas?

Yea..they are not for everyone. But running a window unit full time is no problem bc you get amazing dehumidification.. Better less capacity than more.

And for us-we are only in one room at night-the bedroom. And during the day we are in the rec room and the kitchen is adjacent to it. Bathroom? Who needs it. Again..depends on your life style.

And I am always amazed on the recommended cooling capacity vs what is needed. We have a 7000 BTU unit that cools 700 sq ft of living space comfortably. And one of those rooms has a Cathedral ceiling and 3 exposed walls.

1000BTU/100 sq ft. works in Pa. in 90+ degree days.

Ive been spending about $90/month on gas recently. That is because I bought a house much closer to where I work, I try to bicycle for petty errands, and I drive efficient cars. It is higher than it ought to be because Ive had to take a few extra trips that were ~100mi. Without those, Id guess Id be at about $60-75/month.

It used to be about 3x that much.

12 mile vs 34 mile commute each way is a lifesaver, even if Im paying bigtime for the house now...

Wow, the post about electrical costs is amazing! My old 1200 sq ft apartment with central air (on the sunny side of a brick building, mind you) was just over $100 for the month of may. I bought my house April 28, so I have the bill for the house in May too... $48... thats a 3BR two story house with a walk-up attic. June was just slightly more than that, $54 IIRC. The downside? gas for hot water and our dryer (our stove is electric) is about the same cost... and there is typically only ever one person living in the house!

IMO the biggest difference is that the house, which also gets pelted hard with afternoon hot sun, has window AC's, not a central system (I wanted real radiators in my house for the period-specific look). We only have the AC on in the rooms where we sleep and in the living room when we're home. The living room can be closed from both sides by french doors and the heat goes up the staircase and sucked out the attic by a vent fan. We use ceiling fans everywere that we are, and try to keep the windows open for breeze as much as is possible in western NJ. So far it has worked, fortunately. I guess I should be glad I didnt want a home wth central air!

I have a Saturn Ion and just driving to and from work and doing some additional driving I probably spend about $60.00 a month. But if I take a few short trips as well that can turn into $120.00 or more.

I spend about $100.00 a month. My round trip to work is about 75 miles. (20days *75 miles)/32mpg X $2.00 per gallon = about $94.00. I don't drive much on the weekends. Throw in my limited driving on weekends, well, lets make it $120.00 a month. Last year it was probably about 1/3 more. Next year, who knows?

"about $450 a month for 2 Hondas and a 96 Corvette."

Which do you spend the most on, the 2 hondas (combined) or the vette?

Wife: $150/month
Daughter: As much as she can con from us in terms of us driving the vehicle that she's run close to empty (she puts gas in it when she needs it)
Me: Next to nothing.

Probably $200-$250/month average.
