Final update: (I'm going through all of my still-open threads)
I ended up hiring an electrician. He ripped out all of the old wiring on this circuit and installed 12/3. I love my new lights. Much brighter than I expected. The dimmer ended up being faulty out of the box, but was replaced with an identical one. Microwave is on the same circuit with no issues. Thanks for all the help!
