a teen age boy rear ended my parked truck last night, his car is totaled and completely undrivable, my truck took some damage to the bumper and the trailer hitch. he has farmers and i'm just wondering how they are to deal with? i went and got estimate already and they told me farmers will probably require after market or used parts, i'm really not ok with this since i only buy factory parts for my truck, even the receiver hitch that was damaged was a factory unit that i installed about a year ago. any advice would be appreciated.

I dont think you have to accept anything they say. You should have the right to select your shop and parts. They may be able to delay payment though...

We had someone hit us from behind about seven years ago that had Farmers insurance. They were great to deal with; they arranged a rental and paid to repair our vehicle at one of the most expensive body shops in town.

"complain, complain, complain, and ask to speak to the top manager, and don't settle when they put other people on."

this from an employee at farmer's call center...

I know a lot of Farmers adjusters through my friends, and I work in insurance myself.

Good luck with your request for factory parts. Unless an aftermarket is not available, they will not use factory. Industry standard is to use aftermarket.

And what if that is not acceptable? Let's say, for example, that someone got hit not at their fault, pulling out of a dealership with a brand new car.

Id not settle for used/aftermarket parts, and make it as painful on the insurance company (and the adjuster and their chain of command) as I could. I might be willing to give in certain areas, but not all, that's for sure. And Id expect a line-by-line review of what was selected and why, plus an acceptance of liability upon them for failures associated with the parts.

Here's a question - with the proliferation of ridiculously sized, pricey tires, let's say you have a better tire that is $200 each. Say the accident ruins one, so an axle at minimum must be replaced. Will a matching model to the other axle be selected, or will the cheapest brand/model that meets the mfr specs be selected?

farmers is horrible. MAke sure you go to YOUR SHOP not their shop.
And make sure the shop YOU pick uses new parts.

Farmers will moan. They are cheap SOB..

I can understand qualms against aftermarket parts.

However used parts seem like a decent approach to a vehicle especially if a little older.

How new or old is the vehicle you have?

Sorry about your mishap. They never are fun and the bodywork is never perfect. I am glad I own 100k+ vehicles now.

i just received a call from the kid that hit me, he wants me to get a couple of estimates and maybe settle with out the insurance, what worries me about this is any unseen damage. an estimate is preliminary and often times ends up becoming much more due to finding hidden damage when they tear it down, if i settle outside of insurance then i run the risk of not being able to have a complete repair.

If it was a brand new car, then it is likely that only OE parts would be available anyway. Remember that the insurance company is only obligated to restore you to pre-accident condition; you are not supposed to walk away being "better off."

The insurance companies are usually more than willing to warranty the repair for as long as you own the vehicle if you go to their preferred shops.

I do not work in claims, but I would guess that the first thing the adjuster would check is the amount remaining on those tires. Since replacing two at a time is generally OK by industry standards I doubt they'd be obligated to match the exact brand/model. Then again there are such things as betterment charges so I would not be surprised if you would be charged one.

it's an 04 but i have gone to great lengths to keep it in "like new" condition, i worry about the condition of used parts. it just grinds me because i was legally parked and in my house playing a game with my 4yr old, so this was in no way my fault and i feel i should not need to compromise on the repair, but i don't know what my rights are here.

It's an 04...that is an 8 year old car. Any "correct" new part is in theory, going to be better than what you have on there.

Call your state insurance commissioner, state insurance department or your own insurance company to get the facts you need. My state has a "make whole" requirement that a civil lawyer that I know says that they must use new parts if you insist on them. I hope that is true in your case. I know just how you feel since you are totally blameless in the matter! What hurts is you are at home minding your own business and some one comes along and can instantly destroy your property and even put you in debt when you try to replace your former perfectly fine, well taken care of vehicle. Very frustraiting!

Mopar Monkey,

If you have Comprehensive Coverage on your insurance policy, I would HIGHLY recommend filing a claim with your company, and having them get your deductible back from Farmers Insurance.

This way you will get much speedier service, and have a better chance at higher quality parts than you will with the system that Farmers has in place for handling claims.

If you have a couple months, you can google other people's results when dealing with Farmers Claims, but it will make you sick.

If you don't have Comprehensive coverage, then you're stuck dealing with them. At least ask to verify the source of the used OEM parts before installation. no point putting parts that are in worse shape on your truck than what's currently installed and damaged.

BC.

Don't waste your time. As soon as they hear how much damage there is (I am sure they have no idea how much the dollar amount will be) they are just going to go through insurance anyway. Since it is obviously the other driver's fault, I'd just call Farmer's directly and file a claim.
