I'm thinking about having some vehicle parts painted and I have a question about clear coats. I had some painting done on some motorcycle parts last year and I had the painter apply a product called Tough Coat. It is claimed to be a durable clear coat that is supposed to hold up better to stone chips and the like better than regular clear coat. I'm not seeing any more durability with this product than any other. This piece is all beat up now with all kinds of stone chips in the clear coat. My question is, is there a more durable clear coat available that still looks like normal clear coat? I know there are some products out there that are made specifically for durability, but all of the ones I've seen have a really heavy "orange peel" finish...in other words, they aren't very smooth...any ideas?
Any automotive paint gurus in here?

I'm no paint guru but i have painted a lot of cars and parts over the years.
The Tough Coat i know is made by Krylon and is an enamel paint and not very durable. For durability you want a 2K high solids urethane clear over a high quality base coat.
I like Nason clears over Dupont Chroma Base, the finish is easily controlled to match surrounding panels. Getting a low orange peel without sanding and buffing is fairly easy even for a novice with a good gun, the paint and clear is very forgiving.
The Chroma base is so easy to paint you would almost have to try to get a sag or a run, 2 medium wet coats with the Nason clear produce a nice finish with very little orange peel.
Getting a no orange peel glass finish with a super high gloss requires a lot of skill and a good gun, i use a DeVilbiss HVLP for base coat and a SATA Jet HVLP Digital for clear, both 1.3
