Where do you all buy your automotive paint? I have some tailgates and hoods to paint. I'm interested in a good deal more than super premium outcomes as I'm quite inexperienced and still learning and using cheap HF gear. In the past, I've purchased from random sellers on eBay and Amazon.

There is a local paint shop in West Palm Beach that used to be B+P paints, then changed the name to FinishMaster. Same folks, different name. Paint is silly expensive now. However, they have been able to match paint properly and provide good value. They also replace the paint if something goes wrong. I had one batch that had non stop solvent pops. Brought it back and showed them how it happened. They replaced it with something better, no charge.

I've never ordered paint on Amazon, mostly because I need to match existing, and old, paint.

The few times I bought automotive paint it was from Albert Kemperle Auto Paint Body & Equipment, in Valley Stream, NY.

TCP Global, eBay, local paint suppliers. I've used all of these multiple times in the past. If you get lucky, eBay sometimes provides good deals.

I buy it from Sherwin Williams sometimes because they give me our work discount. But I prefer the Axalta brand (DuPont) or BASF from an independent shop nearby. Twice the price however.

I buy from a local automotive paint and body supply store. I use Axalta base and Nason clears, just as important is getting the color of the primer right for the color you are spraying, the first primer is 2K grey epoxy followed by the correct shade of 2K poly primer which I mix myself from black and white cans and tint bottles. It makes a world of difference in the color match and you use much less base color which is a big $$ saver.

Do not use too much gun for the job they tend to waste a lot of paint. I have some nice Iwata and DeVilbiss guns that are wonderful for full resprays but for single panels I use ANi mid size guns, great quality and priced right, all parts available and totally rebuildable.
This is the place I buy all my spray guns, the R160 is a very nice gun and uses very low cfm if compressor size is a concern. For epoxy and poly primer get the cheapest disposable gun from HF with a 1.5-1.8 tip, they work well enough for this job and after a few uses just bin them and buy another.

Low VOC requires more coats. Commonly, three coats vs. two. I've often wondered if it actually saves chemical release into the air?

I'm lucky enough to have a cousin who does body work. He lives out in the country and does enough work that he mixes his own paint right at his shop. He gave me a tour of his paint mixing facility a couple of weeks ago.

Ace Hardware seems to be working for me.

Some years back I worked in a facility that did, among other things, auto body repair. There was a full PPG Deltron mixing station, all the different type of clears, etc. I asked if I would use the paint booth on off days, and was told to help myself, including to the paint supplies. I was painting a bicycle frames, and the amount of paint I used wasn't even noticeable in their usage book. Man oh man, those were the days! I particularly loved the spray gun cleaning station!
