Any 0w30 users here?

The fact it's not SN Plus or SP doesn't mean much, it's either not tested or certified as SN+/SP, MB229.52 cert takes care of LSPI.
Penn Plat Euro LX is made in Germany and is supposedly a rebottled Shell Helix Ultra ECT C2/C3 oil that isn't widely available in NA and may simply have not been tested as SP oil.

That's not what shell told me.

They said it does not meet lspi testing requirements and is not lspi mitigating.

Here it is again...

It literally says:
"... does not meet the LSPI test requirements as stated for the API SN Plus..."
It does NOT mean it doesn't meet LSPI requirements as stated for the MB229.52, which now includes similar testing.

It states it does not meet lspi TEST REQUIREMENTS. It states IT IS NOT AN LSPI MITIGATING OIL.

I'm not sure how that could be confusing to anyone but do feel free to reach out to Shell yourself if you're not clear on what they said.

API SP - testing leading to LSPI addressing SP certification was done on Ford 2.0L GDI turbo engine only.
D1G2 - was done on GM 2.0L GDI turbo engine only.
Both certs are supposedly good for any engine between 1.5L to 3.5L.
MB 229.52 - iirc more than one engine was tested including gas and diesel engines.
You are welcome to provide proof MB 229.52 is inferior to API SP and/or D1G2.

I go by the manufacturer of the oil states. They state it is not lspi mitigating.

It wouldn't be the first oil (m1 did) to erroneously leave a cert on. No idea. But Alfa Romeo wants API SN Plus or SP and there's one available that meets it for 25 bucks a 5 quart jug that has 1000 ca, m1 AFE which is an outstanding oil.

Pp 5w30 is API SP btw

Taken from https://360.lubrizol.com/2020/Understanding-the-Daimler-MB-229,-d-,52-Specification

The MB 229.52 specification has evolved since its launch, with the Daimler LSPI test being added to the engine test requirements. It is also formulated to go above and beyond the ACEA baseline through:

  • Additional bench tests for oxidation, wear and corrosion
  • Additional engine tests for wear, fuel economy and Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI)
  • More stringent test limits for foaming, pumpability, oxidation, sludge, diesel wear and biofuel

Exactly. I'm aware 229.52 did not always include lspi testing. M1 left it on one of their sn formulations too for quite some time.

No idea about shell but their claim that it's not lspi mitigating while it also showing 2000ca and almost no mg and an owner's manual then specs sn Plus or sp would beg the question why not use the oil that is rated SP and has 1000ca and a 189vi and a perfectly good, available and inexpensive oil.

VW 504/507 oils are basically 20k miles oils since the certification implies passing 650 engine hrs test. With average 30 mi/h speed it equates to 19.5k miles.

I only purchase from reputable sources in Canada.
We don't get half the weird brands that are available in the US.

This seems true, when I go to walmart, Canadian tire, napa, lordco, etc they don't have the weird brands I see are available in other countries.
Motomaster and supertech brands don't even seem like a bad choice, they are a good oil.

The Alfa Giulia calls for an SN Plus or SP rated 0w30 oil.

DO not use pp euro LX. It is not either of those specs and more importantly is not lspi mitigating.

You can use Mopar max pro plus 0w30 and Mobil 1 0w30 AFE.

Amsoil 0w30 also claims to meet specs although you know how that goes. No api certification but probably fine.

PP Euro LX meets the required Fiat 9.55535-GS1 that Alfa calls for. It’s perfectly suitable.

Someone named "Roland" that works on the "Technical Helpdesk" answering random email inquiries wrote that Pennzoil Euro LX 0w30 doesn't mitigate LSPI. "SHELL" didn't tell you this.
Some of the certifications found on the container do cover LSPI, as others have pointed out.
I've run Euro LX 0w30 in two different Mini JCW engines, which are BMW B48 variants (228 HP version as well as a 300+ HP version) with no problems.
I trust the certifications on the container that include LSPI mitigation over Roland's email.
