Very interesting that steam engines can run on recycled motor oil

Valvoline made recycled oil. Not a fan of their products at all. Fair quality at best but would donate it or recycle it to keep it out of my engine or a water treatment facility.

I used the NextGen oils by Valvoline without issue.

I'd use it again if they made more. My work uses recycled& refined oil at work anyways

You would never know if recycled oil is used.

He was a PU fan and now Red Line user

Nothing wrong with recycled/refined motor oil. Good enough for a steam locomotive

Technically Safety-Kleen made the recycled base oil, and Valvoline blended it (only 50% recycled base oil with 50% virgin base oil) with new additives, so NextGen was (is?) technically less than 50% recycled. What problems have you had with Valvoline? Their oil products, both for diesel & gas engines, have always been fine in everything I've used them in. PQIA had issues with regular NG 5W20 & high NOACK, but I never heard of any other issues?
 
Filters it thru a old slinger style filter off a waukesha diesel engine and then pours thru fine paint filter thats clean able
 
Was just never a fan. Wasnt a popular oil for us import guys. I know the Valvoline MaxLife and SML get great reviews and thats great but they arent my cup of tea. I like Quaker State Ultimate Durability and Magnatec 0w20 but right now I am back to liquid overkill. There are people here who hate Pennzoil and for a time I was in that posse. Had great results just felt that my used oil analysis and heavy foot needed a more durable option. HART racing and Honda/Acura REALTIME and filled with Redline Oil too!

Yeah I recall the NOACK issue and if I recall it was just outside the margin of error. Then again a member in here who fancies himself has a expert in tribology states NOACK is a fictional number.
 
I'm a lover of steam locos myself, I wish I was old enough to have grown up while they still ruled the rails. They're truly awesome manmade machines that helped expand the industrialization of the whole country.
 
Safety Clean's re-refined oil is some of the best around. They regularly pass stringent testing like Allison Transmission testing for vehicles with combined sumps (motor & transmission) and are listed by many MFGs as acceptable for serious high HP applications. I'd run a top grade re-refined oil any day over plain virgin petro based stock. They get bought as helo lubes, marine lubes, stationary engine lubes, fleet operations with engines going million mile life expectancy, etc...

But hey, what do I know ...
 
Both the UP 844 and soon to be finished UP 4014 are both converted to oil burners.:) On the topic of recycling used motor oil, I heat my shop on 25% diesel and 75% wastes oil with an old 1940's Duo-Therm oil heater:) I just got a deal on 650 gallons of waste diesel for 17 cent a gallon, so lots of heat.:)
