You've misread.

The dealer said the tires could blow at any minute.

DT then measured them at 3/32.

The dealer was right. DT made the mistake of only looking on the outside.
 
I don't think a tire is going to blow until after you've cut through the steel belts. No wet traction, but they have a ways to go to become bombs.

I like the idea of cutting the wheels at the gas station, didn't think of that. But my cars are easy enough to inspect.

I did just pull the snows off the car, and found two or three flat spots on a rear tire. Inside too. So a casual inspection had not caught those. Probably would have noticed it if I had been checking once a week or so.
