Another old battery at tractor supply

Every time I go I have to look at the batteries to see how old they are. Their prices are sky high and there's a battery mart a few blocks down the road with much better pricing.

Because of this they don't sell many batteries.

Ran across this jewel tonight.

There is a Tractor Supply next to a Rural King in Circleville, OH. I don't know how that Tractor Supply stays in business because I never see many vehicles parked there but the Rural King is always busy and well staffed.

That doesn't seem super old to me but I don't really know anything about battery shelf life. How does sitting on a shelf in a store effect battery life?

Many items at Tractor Supply are at very high ... even extreme markups.

People are paying Tractor Supply prices. I recall buying trailer wheel bearing covers at Tractor Supply for $29.99. Same exact wheel bearing covers at AutoZone for $8.99, and same exact wheel bearing covers on Amazon for $3.49.

They tend to have AAP prices without any discount codes. Somebody must like them, but I've only ever been in one when there was a clearance I knew of in advance!

If no one buys it, what should they do with it, when it's a year old?
A friend of mine owned a wharehouse on Staten Island from 1954 until 2005. If a Delco battery was over 1 year old, they used to tear off the warranty stickers and return it to Delco for full credit. The old batteries were sold for scrap. His son later worked for Auto Plus and it was the same deal. I picked up many good batteries over the years. The last 6 or 7 I got were $2 each.

Flooded batteries will sulfate as well as lose charge sitting. Both cut the battery life short.

There's a good chance that battery is run down enough to not start a car.

Also say a healthy battery lasts 3 years. Might get 1 year out of that one.

I'm sure most people here buy the freshest battery on the shelf or atleast one made in the last couple of months.

I just buy dog food and grease. They have a good grease selection.

The farm stores do not move a lot of batteries except for farm equipment. Two months ago I had to settle for an older battery because there wasn't another group 56 battery within 100+ miles. It was seven months old on the shelf. I used my battery tester on it , it still measured 12.6 volts and tested much better than its rated specs. I don't like buying such a battery but I had no choice.

You'd think tractor supply would be inexpensive as farmers aren't exactly raking in the dough.

Not much different than Home Depot...I don't think either place is first on anyone's list when they need a battery.
We have a regional chain called Bi-Mart, most of their batteries are 6 to 9 months old, and covered in dust, no matter the location.
