Making it short. 2012 Impala started using oil at a qt per 3k ,not bad with no leaks. Yesterday she informed me that it was smoking while in school line so I need to go over and check out. This is the 4th vehicle that hits 150k then engine gets thirsty for oil which first 3 were Pennzoil conventional 3k oil changes and this one is Pennzoil Platinum 5k oil changes. This is looking more and more like a pattern. Engines are always clean.

What engine does this vehicle have in it? What are the driving habits?

When was the last time the PCV was changed? But with my Corolla 150K has me getting nervous! I'm still under a half quart up from a cup in an OCI but I haven't changed my PCV in over 30K now but it will happen this next spring!

PENNZOIL products. Since the 1970s thru until about the mid 1990s when I finally gave up, each of my new vehicles , I would try to use Pennzoil as recommended by many folks. Each and every time I had to stop and use a different oil brand because the cars would run almost an entire quart low in 3000 miles? Have not tried Pennzoil since then. I know they make fine , quality products that can not use oil in every vehicle or they could not be in business near 100 years. Seems that some cars don't work the same with certain oils.?

My wife's '11 equinox was using 1 qt in 750 miles. With no visable smoke or leaks. I started using 4 qts 10w30 oil instead of 5w30, with 1 qt of my own 10/40, 20/50, mix at change time. And whenever it needs to be topped off. It cut the usage down to 1 qt in 2k miles. The engine has used oil since she got it, and now has 70k miles on it. I pay no attention to the dexos spec as it means nothing ion the real world.,,,

Never. She won't do regular maintenance. Been trying to get her to change plugs or even transmission nada. If it ain't broken then don't do anything. I am waiting for her to give me a call what vehicle she wants next. I even told her that it's not a good time for looking at used cars.

Not sure if I follow. She drives it hard, but doesn't do maintenance... but gets oil changes on a regular basis, no?

Seems like it is new enough that hard throttle on a regular basis should not be a problem. So I'm wondering if it is PCV or something similar.

You are correct. Oil changes every 5k and air filter whenever.

LOL like they say you can pay me now or you can pay me later. I'm shocked she will even do oil changes. Just add oil and forget about it until it dies!

timing chain stretch on an older GM 3.6 with that many miles?...seems to be a common issue with them...very little other maintenance to the engine didn't help (at least 50K over on plugs but you know that)...good luck

I’ve tried many years to love Pennzoil, and I don’t hate it, but I’ve come to find that it just burns so much more than other oil brands in all of my particular applications. Most recently, my 2.2L 2000 camry(known oil burner) started consuming at a rate of 1 qt every 600 miles on PYB. I’ve since used havoline HM, castrol GTX HM and supertech all in 5w30 and consumption went back to 1qt per 1500-1800. I’m sure pennzoil is great, it just burned too much for me.

I'd switch brands and see what happens. Maybe chose a higher grade and high mileage oil...? I'll be honest, I've never used Pennzoil or Quaker State oil. I've used most other major brands, Valvoline, Castrol, Mobil and now Super Tech.

just my $0.02

I have had the same experience. My advice would be to try another brand of oil.

She won't switch since that is all my dad used. Pennzoil or nothing.
