another MMO question

Hey Guys,

I know that the MMO topic comes up often here, but I wanted some opinions on it as I am considering using the stuff. I am thinking of using it as a finsisher (12-16 oz) for the last 1000 miles on my OCI. I have never used it before, and I suppose my concern is that its mineral spirits will be hard on my engine seals. I dont have a problem with sludge, just want my engine to stay as clean as possible.

Your car is only 64k miles and if you had been using M1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance for several oil changes with less than 10-12k OCI, you don't need to use MMO to keep the engine clean.

Seafoam will not swell seals, IIRC MMO does swell, but a very small amount .Someone here did a very good seal swell comparison.It's in the archives under additives I believe.

mmo will not hurt your engine if used in the correct dose. if your car has been run on Mobil 1, you really don't need this as the previous members have posted. I used to add this to my oil at every change during the 80's but with todays oil its really rarely needed.

I bought the car at 62K. Prior to me it had 5K OCIs at a Toyota Dealearship in PA

If you're really feeling anal, you could run a qt of MMO for 1500 miles or so and then dump and replace with synthetic. That's awfully low mileage to worry about engine filth if it got regular oil changes...regardless of what they used to fill it.

sounds like you don't have to put MMO into your crankcase

12-16oz. for the last 1000 miles seems like a good idea. As long as regular maintenance was done prior to your ownership, it should be clean.

As so many have stated, if your using a good oil and then MMO is more than likely not necessary.

MMO in the crankcase is becoming less and less useful over the decades.
It simply is not needed as much anymore.
But like before,it surely can help if you DO need it.
Always remember that MMO will thin your oil - substantially.
This is rarely good in summer, but can be a help in winter.
Compensate with thicker oil in Summer, or use it for short periods with lighter loads - no racing around all the time.

Should you use it in this car? It is the UNSEEN things that may be helped, even if your engine looks spotless under the valve cover. Specifically, the ring/piston land areas.
A short run of MMO would help here.
We don't use every tool in the toolbox every day. Nowadays, MMO in the crankcase is like that - here and there for special purposes.

I DO use a bit in the gas almost all the time, though!

Forget the 1940's era MMO and just use Pennzoil Ultra or Pennzoil Platinum. Both have a ton of Calcium and other detergents which will help keep your engine clean.
