Another Fram XG10415 C&P and Failure

In the first pic it doesn't look like the foam extends over some media? The black foam should cover all of the media. Thanks for sharing your Mahle model.
This is one of the reasons why I wonder if Volvo does additional QA on their branded stuff. The Volvo air filter in our car right now (IIRC) has foam the exact footprint of the pleats. And pictures I've seen online are the same. It makes me wonder if their oil filter might also be some slight improvement over a MANN, despite their seeming identical-ness.

Could MANN actually be OEM for our 3.2L air filter or, if Mahle was OEM, they switched to MANN? Since they're already sourcing the MANN oil filter why not the air filter too?

Isn't that foam for noise reduction and not a filter?
I always assumed it keeps the big stuff out of the filter media to prolong the life of the filter. It's a big difference in my experience that the media without the foam covering it is that the bugs etc plug up the filter pretty thick. Perhaps other engines & air filter intake design does a better job & one is not needed?

They have the Volvo trademark so is a specific product Mann makes for them. It may be the same media, everything identical, but maybe not. Volvo warranties the filters just like other parts. There may be extra QC, maybe not since Mann should already have good QC.

Awhile back when I did some research, I believe MANN was OEM for oil filters and Mahle OEM for air filters. But maybe that is wrong, or has changed? I do know that Hengst is OEM for Mercedes and Porsche (air and oil? or just one or the other?), so I'd think the higher dollar vehicles might have OEMs that produce higher quality?

And here is the one I bought and haven't used yet:

Shouldn't the ends of the pleats be sealed with adhesive or something? Are you able to push anything through them to the clean side of the filter?

Are you talking about the end of the pleats that is touching the foam? The foam is glued to the ends of the pleats, but I'm guessing the glue is only in certain spots.

I'm not sure what you mean here.

I mean these gaps. Do they go through to the clean side of the filter?

FYI, I got the Hengst air and oil filters in. They appear to be equal or higher quality to OEM. I believe I counted more pleats on the Hengst air filter. I took some pics, just have to upload them.
