Another Fram XG10415 C&P and Failure

Second Fram Ultra XG10415 in this car. Ran for 5k miles in a 2015 Volvo XC60 T6 3.0 with Mobil1 0w40 FS Euro. 150k mi on the car.

The first had a partial separation of the end caps.

This one, one end cap partially separated from media and one completely. It got stuck in bottom just like what happened to @fantastic. While the media looks good (captured quite a bit of carbon) and wire backing is a plus, the distribution of the carbon leads me to believe this leaked where the media separated from the end cap. See the darker areas on the ends which corresponds to where the top cap stayed in place. While I cant judge 100%, because flow, lol, I'll just stay away from these from now on.

Refilled with Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 and a German built Valvoline VO-97 filter.

Reminds me of the OG XG post use cartridges for BMW applications posted here. Had very similar results to topic and couldn't be recommended for those applications. My speculation is that fit in housing somehow a factor, but there could be others. Just best to avoid, use one with which you've have had good experience, or the OEM.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this filter. I think it is wise to post these since others may search & realize it's not an installation error.
Are these any relation to the newer SuperTechs with the white media? ST10158, ST9018, ST10358, etc.?
Those end caps look a lot better so you should be fine.
Should be contacting Fram to let them know these are failing in use. They may care, or maybe not ... but mention also that you're done buying their products.
Done! (since I'm affected too)

Letter sounds good! Let us know IF you get a response. FWIW, I've been using either the Genuine Volvo, or the MANN (they appear to be one and the same on this model). In fact, I think the Volvo filter actually says 'MANN' on it. I don't know if the Volvo version goes through any additional QA, but that might make it worth the extra couple of bucks.

Thanks! Will certainly post back if I hear anything. You're right that Volvo, & Purolator, is simply sourcing the MANN filter for this application.

And the MANN is not even that expensive ~$7 from Rock Auto. I bought the Fram Ultra as an upgrade and was almost triple price. 😅 on me.

Funny you should mention. This is how a Fram FE9911 came out of my wife's 2.5L VW at 10K miles. End cap (housing side) COMPLETELY sheared. Car has 200k miles and I've done countless oil changes on it including this one so I know it didn't go in defective.

I seem to remember several years ago people having similar problems with Ultra cartridge filters in Mazda/Ford and Maybe Toyota? applications. Like the cartridges were slightly too tall and being compressed in the housing, something had to give so the end caps would break off.

I just did a bit of research for my upcoming oil change on our Volvo and ended up buying Hengst from FCP Euro. Also bought a Hengst air intake filter from them. I like that their quality seems top notch (they are OEM for Mercedes). The Mahle air filter I previously bought seems poorly constructed. The foam cover is cut crookedly. I will compare to the Hengst air filter when it arrives. Prices were good at FCP Euro. Paid $33 with shipping for the oil and air filter. That's about $5 more than Amazon, but Amazon had a stupid 20+ day lead time before the Hengst oil filter would ship.

Here is a pic of the crooked foam from an online seller:

Disappointing to see the Mahle still has that uncovered media on new ones. The one I had was from 9 years ago & that shouldn't still be happening 9 years later! Yeah, let me know what the Hengst air filter looks like. I found out about Hengst when I had my Saturn cartridge oil filter. Never a problem. Thanks!

I've been using Hengst air filters for a while now. Good construction, but never had a problem with Mahle either. Here's a pic of the one going into the car now. A smaller prefilter foam as well, but shorter on opposite side and more uniform in general than the one above.

In the first pic it doesn't look like the foam extends over some media? The black foam should cover all of the media. Thanks for sharing your Mahle model.

It doesn't extend, pretty much covers it exactly with the exception of the 2-3 shorter folds of the air filter. No Mahle pics since I haven't used them except for CAF in quite some time.

I recently had a FRAM hydraulic filter come apart where the can and base plate are crimped together. It was brand new and failed within 10 minutes of being installed. The leaking oil sprayed on the exhaust and started a fire. Luckily we had an extinguisher and got the fire out before any real damage was done. I'll never run FRAM filters again.
