I have a 95 lexus gs300 with around 163k on the transmission, currently running auto rx in the motor and plan to do so in the transmission in the future. I was looking at the transmission fluid calculator and had a question
According to the calculator, since my transmission holds 8.3qts
and a drain and fill is 2 qts, I will need to do around 12-13 drain and fills to get new fluid
Can I do the drain and fills back to back in one session, or do i do a drain and fill, drive, then do it again. 13 drain and fills is alot to do but I dont want to risk this transmission by doing a flush
THanks

Draining the transmission 12-13 times with new fluid is a waste of money, time and fluid. If your intent is to get every last drop of old ATF out of the system use a fluid exchange machine such as the T-Tech that uses the transmission's pump to circulate old fluid out and new fluid in. Otherwise, just do three drain/fills back to back with a few minutes of driving in between, this will freshen up the fluid and won't cost too much. Since drain/fills are easy and cheap to do feel free to perform the service anywhere from every oil change (you're already under there anyway) to every 15K-30K.

I agree 12-13 drain and refills is kind of a waste of time and money.

What bad thing(s) do you think a flush will do?

A flush or many drain & refills will replace the fluid in the transmission and the new fluid being pushed around the transmission by the transmission pump will loosen crud to some extent. It does not matter how the new fluid got in the transmission.

No flush machines (T-Tech included) actually uses the machine to push new fluid through the transmission. Maybe they should be called drain and fill machines. The machine only pushes new fluid back into the pan, from there the pump in the transmission pumps it around.

If you think there might be crud sitting on the bottom of the pan, then you should drop the pan, clean it and replace the filter regardless of how you change the fluid.

Many people do a cooling line flush which is the most cost effective way to do a total ATF replacement. You can do it yourself with a helper (or two).

12 d/r's is a waste of time and money. Get it flushed. Make sure a pan drop is performed 1st to clean the pan, magnet, change the filter, and for general inspection. I doubt that there is any crud to worry about. Flush it via ATF machine or cooler line method. Do not use and chemicals before/after the flush. Most 'machine flushes' like to add preflushcleaners and postflushconditioners that are NOT needed. Make sure an ATF that mentions your requirements is used, or bring your own ATF.

A drain/refill does require 10minutes of driving between each drain/refill. If you don't drive, you are simply dumping brand new atf.

Use the cooling line flush. Except for perhaps the very first time, it's not that difficult, and well worth the effort.
