Sorry, could not resist it.

This was about the time my father joined the Police force in the UK
I wonder if he had seen this film at the cinema?

Different societies and cultures.

The USA has always been just a thin veneer away from being
the wild west, nothing ever really changed.

My dad was a city cop long ago. He said he'd once fired a warning shot with a running felon-the guy just put it in another gear and was gone. Often the cops knew the offenders as they were repeaters in and out of prison, so when a certain profile of a robber happened it was usually 'that guy' who had recently been released again. Pop got tired of it all and was glad to retire-that was 35 years ago. As far as an innocent guy being shot in the back-in that day hardly anybody ran-on foot or car-from a cop. Now we have idiots running and car chases over even minor warrants, ect.

I could not imagine a place with no guns.. I rarely carry but i do keep a heater in my car from home to the shop. My wife is another story.

My father seved for 23 years, He could be called and issued a firearm if it was deemed nessasary (302 Rifel) But if that ever happened he did not mention it.

The exception was, at times he would escort a payroll transport by boat. He then was given the option of carrying a S&W .38 and a sealed tin of ammo.
He was told he was not allowed to break the seal on the ammo tin, unless he was in a life threatening situation.
He thought that if he did, he would also be writing reports and being questioned for a month. So he stopped drawing the weapon.

He did carry a Truncheon about 16" long and made of Lignum vite (Ironwood)
He did use it once, early in his career, and was put on suspension. However it was deemed after an inquiry that it's use was justified.

My father (as was, and is, the police union) was not in favour of arming police on a regular basis.
