My father seved for 23 years, He could be called and issued a firearm if it was deemed nessasary (302 Rifel) But if that ever happened he did not mention it.
The exception was, at times he would escort a payroll transport by boat. He then was given the option of carrying a S&W .38 and a sealed tin of ammo.
He was told he was not allowed to break the seal on the ammo tin, unless he was in a life threatening situation.
He thought that if he did, he would also be writing reports and being questioned for a month. So he stopped drawing the weapon.
He did carry a Truncheon about 16" long and made of Lignum vite (Ironwood)
He did use it once, early in his career, and was put on suspension. However it was deemed after an inquiry that it's use was justified.
My father (as was, and is, the police union) was not in favour of arming police on a regular basis.
