Per the stickey...here's our info on two vehicles. We live in south Florida. It's hot!

Car one: 07 toyota corolla, Daily driver, short trips around town, errands and so forth. Driven hard by the wife. 167K miles. Looking for a reasonably priced oil per mile, I know synthetic costs more upfront but if we get better average cost out of it thats fine. No known problems. What filter brand might you recommend? Frequency of change?

Car (Van) two: 06 toyota sienna van. Driven daily. Pulls a trailer (3K lbs) with brakes and teknoisha brake controller, rear helper bags in coils. Almost all under 50 mph, around town. A few freeway runs at 65. I take it easy with her, lots of wind drag. 130K miles. This year had an additional oil and transmission cooler, for towing. IF the best oil for this vehicle isn't too much I'll go with that, but I am somewhat price conscious. What filter brand might you recommend? Frequency of change?

In a perfect world I could use the same oil for both, buy it at the store and go quite a ways between oil changes. I understand that's not likely. Synthetic or regular is fine, but I'd hope to be able to go longer between changes with synthetic to offset some of the additional cost.

Welcome! Personally, I'd grab some QSUD 5W30 from Walmart and change both vehicles at around 5k miles. Why not longer on a syn? For the Corolla, short trips and hard driving. For the Sienna, towing a trailer. For filters, I am partial to Wix/NAPA Gold. Of course, everyone will have their own preferences.

Welcome!

I like either a 5k or 10k oci for the ease of remembering when service is due. Id go 5k oci on Quaker State conventional or 10k on Quaker State synthetic...whatever suits your fancy. Oil filter...take your pic. I like Fram filters as they have the grippy paint that makes R and R easier. YMMV

Yeah napa gold is a great filter. I run fram ultra. Find a good 5w30 you like and change them both at 5k intervals. The end. If it were me, it would probably be supertech synthetic 5w30 and a fram ultra X2 oci. Or any other decent synthetic or blend. Get some good oil and some great filtration and you are good.

Actually, if you factor in current rebates generally available throughout the year, you can get quality syn oils for $2/qt or the same price as most good quality conventionals. If you factor in an extended OCI, the NET cost of the syn can drop to $1.50/qt or less. PP/QSUD on sale for rest of 2016. M1 on sale through end of October. If AutoZone comes out with their $2/qt syn oil clearances in December, your net cost after rebates will be only the tax, or about 12c per qt.

Fram Orange can and 20w50

. A quick google search shows 5w30 is proper for both.
Have you done your own oil changes on these two cars in the past?

Mobil 1 5w30 or Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 & a Fram Ultra changed every 7,500 miles for both.

Florida isn't that hot. It's humid.

First of all I presume the owners manual calls for some type of Xw30 and if you like getting the best fuel economy and don't have any oil leaks, just pick out the cheapest major brand 0 or 5w30 on special at Wallymart.
By major brand I mean Mobil, Castrol, Shell Sopus group (Penn in particular) and Liqui Moly. If your engines burn or leak oil, then I also regard Valvoline as a major brand, as their Maxlife HM oil is a good one if the oil consumption does not warrant the use of a stop leak additive.

If you can't afford an OEM or Mobil oil filter, just pick up the cheapest one in Wallmart that has a name you recognise.
If you use cheap oil and filter then I would change the oil every 5000 miles. If you use an OEM standard filter, then there is nothing wrong with 2 for 1, so change oil every 5000 miles and oil filter every 10,000 miles.

Mobil 1 has rebates on their products until end of Oct

WalMart has the oil on markdown to 22.88 here. Minus a 12$ rebate makes it around 12$ for 5 quarts. Limit 2 rebates per address.

Get you some in a 5w30 or 10w30 and you got great oil and a great deal. And use it for 10K miles. If you have family or friends who do not use the rebates you could use their address for 2 additional rebates.

Happy motoring

Toyota filters, or maybe something of similar cost. I'd skip the fancy/expensive ones. Check ebay for cheap OEM filters in bulk. 5k OCI, synthetic, 5W30 or 10W30, won't matter. Buy oil when on sale. You didn't say what anual miles but I'm guessing 15k/year, on each vehicle, that's 6 changes, so what, 6 filters and 30 quarts of oil?

I figure, the engines can use the shorter OCI due to use. Thus I'd short change the OCI to 5k. But, if 5k rolls around and life is too busy, and it's 6k... big deal, change it at 6k. The oil doesn't magically stop working at the end of a chosen interval. 5k can be a nice number, whenever the 1,000 digit on the odometer is a 0 or a 5, time for a tire rotation and oil change.

I suspect the minivan would be fine with 10k, but the Corolla is probably better with 5k. Different sump sizes, different usage. Honestly... as long as you keep oil in the Corolla sump it probably won't care about 10k OCI's, but I'd err towards shorter. If it was me. You could split the diff and do 7,500 mile OCI's, as indicated above, and might keep it $100 in filters&oil per year, shopping for everything on sale.

I would go Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and a Fram ultra filter (Both at Walmart's). I think 7,500 mile OCI is easy for this combo. 7,500, 15,000,etc is easy to remember. Ed

Unless you're far away from a Toyota dealership, or have a phobia about ordering from Amazon, there's no reason not to buy the OEM filters. They are inexpensive and fantastic.

Becasue they are short trippers or towing, I'd change the oil every 6-months (easy to remember) and prolly use a Fram ToughGuard. I'd run Maxlife 5w30 (red bottle syn-blend) in both. It's good oil and readily available

Spring and fall. Gotta get under there an look stuff over, check other fluids, etc. Twice a year is a sort of minimum. Might as well change the oil while you're at it

ST synthetic works well for 5k changes, which matches up well with your driving habits. Since you are trying to save $$, a Fram Ultra makes sence, changed every 15k.

Wow guys thanks a lot. I guess I was expecting different feedback on the van because it's working harder as a tow vehicle, but it looks like the overall consensus is 5w30 synthetic at 7500 for both, no specific filter required...except that it be a brand name or better, would be oem or premium filter. OR use regular oil of the same weight changed at 5k miles. Any other thoughts appreciated. How do you get the mobile 1 rebate? Online?

For convenience and durability, 5w30 Amsoil Sig Series and Fram Ultra with yearly changes. Ends up being cheaper and less hassle, isn't that what you want? Good luck!
