Another (and hopefully unexplored) 5w20 question.

So I understand Ford specifies 5w20 in all the modular engines and many other engines, even back to about 1990. What about the V10? That is modular, right?

Okay, so if the V10 is specified to take 5w20, then somebody with a motorhome tell me what does YOUR manual state for oil grade. I am thinking they would specify 5w30 for the heavy motorhome application. Need to see it for Class A too as they are generally heavier than Class C.

I have a friend with a 2001 F350 with a V10 and I believe he said that they spec 5W20 in it.

Interesting question. My girlfriend's dad recently traded in his Class A with the Ford V10. I'll ask him what it called for.

While I'm an admitted skeptic of the 5W-20 uber alles movement, the infamous Covington engine failure probably was not due to the use of 5W-20 so much as pushing a 40' blunt-force trauma motor home through 90+ degree F. air at 80+ mph while additionally pulling a 20' service trailer containing several competition dirt bikes and their associated support paraphenalia and not bothering to change the nominal "conventional" oil in well over 7,500 miles. There's a reason more frequent oil changes are specified under "severe service" and this example probably serves as one of them. For those unfamiliar with the story, the engine spun some bearings and Ms Covington demanded that Ford replace it. If memory serves me, what she was finally offered was a free $10,000.00 shortblock if she'd pay the $2,000.00 installation labor.

I think that it was determined that, in that case, there was an unexpressed concession that there were some flaws in some V10 engines that were showing up even in spec'd service. The $2000 was the payoff/penalty for not adhering to the maintenance schedule.

Each paid their pound of flesh based on unproven liabilty.

Yeah, but it took a long time and a lot of heart aches. In the interim, she had no wheels. I'd would, at the very least, be changing that oil a LOT pulling all that weight and in the conditions she described. I still find it hard to believe that Ford is calling for 5W-20 across the board. There is no WAY it will see its way into my 5.4 or my two V6 Accords, period. I have UOA's to back up all my reasoning.

Why? Specifically, why would you think 5w30 would be specified?

Schmoe, you seem to also hold TallPaul's position. Can you fill me in?

I still can't believe they'd put a gas V10 in a motorhome. I saw a couple on a road trip this past spring break, and I was like

lol. I know that V10 has gobs of low end torque, almost as much as the Powerstroke IIRC. But, still, those motorhomes are big and heavy, and to constantly lug one of those around with a gas engine just doesn't make sence to me. I can't imagine the sh*tty gas mileage that thing gets...

I believe the Ford V10 has replaced the old Ford 460 industrial engines in stationary applications too. In some situations people don't want a diesel.

Well, I don't know if all have one ..but there's an oil cooler available for all modular engines in one form or another. I've only seen the coolant exchangers. I have a BIG sandwich one for a 5.4 that allegedly is used on the V10 as well. The only real difference between that and the ones Ford have been using through most of the 80's is the bigger size and the extension bolt. I've also seen a sandwich that isn't an exchanger for the V10..but for all I know it routes to one of the lower rad hose Laminova exchangers.

According to my Ford manual, the oil capacity is 6 qts ,including filter change, and coolant is 30.6 quarts for the V10 in an E series van or commercial truck.

I think some people still need to realize that it is the condition of the oil inside the working parts of the engine that is the determining factor of longevity, not necessarily how thick it is when sitting in the bottle or sump. 20w50 didn't save Red Bowtie's 572.

427Z06 shame shame.... All of ok most of GM's PErformance Parts Motor's especialy the crate engines call for 20W50 in the pink installation and parts manual that ships with them. I have the pink manuals for the 502 and ZZ small blocks at home.

And these are the official manuals from GM Performance Parts, or are they the one's the dealer ships inside the crates?
