This doesn't help but starting with the big box home stores most plumbing fittings are China made and use about half the material a quality fitting uses . It's all about finesse now when tightening fittings , too little at leaks too much and the fitting expands, cracks etc. if you want a real quality plumbing fitting you have to go to a plumbing supply house .

Plus the ex-thing opens and closes. I wanted to check for leaks.

I kinda like the "just messed up" look... It ain't coming apart again, that much I know.
