So, I bought a mini micro sd card reader that plugs right into the micro-usb without an adapter.
I bought it so I could copy files off the card in my dashcam, or play them if necessary without having my laptop everywhere.
But, it wont work with Android 6 on my HTC One M9. If I go into ES File Explorer it shows it as a device, but with no size and when you click it, it says its not accessible or some such garbage.
I looked around a bunch. Found out maybe it was because of the ExFAT filesystem on the card?
So, I plugged it into my old HTC One M7 to test and it works right off the bat.
So for now I can carry my old phone with me, but I really shouldn't have to.
For reference, the M7 is running 4.4.

I'm not sure all phones are capable of "hosting" something connected to its micro usb port. Also a hosting cable might be needed. I don't THINK it has anything to do with Android 6, but could be wrong. I think your best bet might be to get a card reader that has a full size USB connection and a micro USB host cable that is male micro USB on one end and female full size USB on the other and connect that cable to the phone and reader. It still may not work though, I'd probably just stick to using the older phone if that's working for you.

It does, because I can use a usb key with an adapter just fine. And I tried a standard SD card adapter from my computer for this card, and it doesn't work either with the same micro sd card. But, I tried the sd card from my camera and that worked fine.

Have you tried any other file managers other than ES Explorer. Odd that it can read one type of external storage but not another. I wonder if its some type of incompatibility with that particular card that doesn't exist with your other equipment. Have you tried another card with the new phone? Android 6 certainly has its share of issues at this point, this could be another one I guess.

Yeah, I have tried other managers. It not mounted, but it shows that its there.
I don't have another micro sd card to try.
Well, I do, but I have no idea where it would be.
