With much consternation and hand-wringing lately over Purolator filter tears, the time was right to take a few minutes tonight and look at some filters I've had sitting around.

All filters were examined utilizing a chain-type exhaust pipe cutter, as to limit debris contamination from other methods (dremel, hacksaw, etc).

This is by no means scientific, nor are the pictures that fantastic (poor workshop lighting). Regardless, without further ado...

This is an (obviously) unused filter that's nice to look at for comparison. No issues noted. Album - http://imgur.com/a/rxDxZ

Filter was in use for around 7,000 miles on a just purchased (at 100K) 1MZ-FE. Prior to this, vehicle received dealer bulk fill, and during this OCI, oil was Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30. No issues were noted, with even pleat spacing and no element tears. ADBV was excellent, doing a great job of holding a large quantity of oil in the filter.

Utilized on the same 1MZ-FE, again for around 7,000 miles (2nd OCI since purchase). Same Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30. No issues noted, with even pleat spacing and no element tears. As well, ADBV was excellent, with large amount of oil retained in filter.

This is where things, in the land of BiTOG, get interesting. Here we have a Hastings LF110, utilized on a 5.4L Ford. OCI and oil type are unknown, so please keep that in mind before coming to any conclusions.

First off, ADBV performance was poor in comparison to the Motorcraft filters, with a minimal amount of liquid retained in the can. As well, leakage was noted when orientation was changed. Secondly, while filter element spacing was neat and uniform on one side, the other was a mess, with two large tears/filter seperation (lighter area on bottom of pleat):

On top of that, a large amount of debris was noticed in the can, which wasn't observed on any of the Motorcraft products. Again, I stress that OCI/oil is unknown.

First OCI (with Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w-20) after LF110/unknown oil. No issues noted. Overall even pleat spacing, with slight deformation on one side -- no filter tears/separation. ADBV performance was, like the other Motorcraft products, excellent, with a large amount of oil retained, regardless of movement. The large amount of debris noticed in the Hastings can was not witnessed here.

Ford modular motors are known for having high oil pressure on cold starts. My Marauder will register 100 lbs with 5w30 and I'm told this is common. It appears the Hastings may not be a good choice for this application.

As aforementioned, the oil and mileage are both unknown -- lets not condemn a manufacturer based upon what we're seeing here.
