Good afternoon guys. i was just wondering. If Amsoil XL was a good product to use. The reason i ask is my neighbor gave me 5 qts of Amsoil XL 5-30. Which he uses for his G37. He swears by the stuff. I just curious. Thanks for the help.

Excellent oil.

*If* I was going to pay full price for ANY oil out there, it would be Amsoil XL.

That is over any other Amsoil product or OTC syn.

Use it for 7500 miles or 6 months with no problems.

I used the XL 5w30 before I switched over to the ASL 5w30.

Question for ya Bill. Would you run the *XL* oils during the cold winter months also?

I guess the main question is,just how good are the XL series of motor oil during the winter months? Thats one reason why I went with the ASL version as I felt it would offer me "better protection"

As someone who runs conventional oils all his life in cold winter temps and has many 200k+ engines over the last 30 plus years in the family, I'd run XL with no worries.

Today's conventional oils are so good even in below zero temps so XL is fine. (heck, yesterdays did fine)

For a oil that is a 25k motor oil like ASL is, I'm not impressed with what I've seen. There have been a few UOAs that show it pretty well done *well* short of that number incl my own use.

The thing I like about XL is that Amsoil calls it a 7,500 mile oil and it does excellent in ALL of those 7,500 miles.

Take care, Bill

In order to meet the current API specs, most conventional oils use either some Grp III or Group II+ which makes them synthetic blends by definition. I believe MC is using a Grp III.

How about API SE oils? What group would those be? (that is as far back as I remember using... showing my age

You bought oil in cans and a case was 24 quarts! Funnels were the rule.

None of this wimpy 6 pack being a case.

It would sure be interesting to see a few things;

1. What the pour point of yesterdays 10w30 oils were.

2. A UOA from a 3-4k run of the same 10w30 in my old carb'd 390CI 1971 F250 which you could smell the gas when running...

Amazing that engines even ran much less lasted from those years.

xl is a great winter oil. Used xlm for years in my si and crv. Just wish amsoil would start selling jugs (4-5 litres). It's a pita to pour old oil into quart containers for dropping off at my local oil recycling depot

Have for some time been getting XL in gallon jugs here in the US.

Bill, API SE oils everyone was draining them at 3k mile intervals.

In order to meet the more demanding GF4/5 specs, higher grade base oils are being used. It's not debatable, it's a fact.

Also, engines today are producing more power and OEM's are calling for longer drain intervals. There may be a day Bill when you can't buy conventional oil anymore. Conventional meaning
Your practice is excellent and I wouldn't deviate from what you have done. You simply buy the cheapest oil that meets the current API specifications. That is all one needs to be concerned about. It's worked well for you.

My point was that greater demands are being put on motor oil and in turn, better base oils (synthetic) are becoming increasingly more popular.

No problem. I actually agree with you. I was just pointing out the evolution of it all...

doh! I guess 30 seconds of my time to actually look would have been good lol. However, 1 us gallon still won't hold the 4.4 litres of used oil on it's own. Boo the imperial system!

Group I

Lets change that a bit...group 1, plus a TON of VII's, to make 'best of both world' grades like 10W-40 and 10W-50!!!

WooHoo!
