Amsoil way to $$$$$...switching to RTS

I have been a long time Amsoil user and supporter, but $30 a gallon for 15w40 HDEO PLUS the shipping?!!! C'mon......Even going 20-25k on changes just doesn't make sense with this expensive oil when I can walk into Wal-Mart, buy RTS 5w-40 off the shelf and get just as good of protection for 10-15k with my bypass filtration. Any thoughts guys?

Alwyas had synthetic and don't want to go back to using Dino. I might digress on using RTS until I find out what group it's in. I HATE to give up on Amsoil, but $ is tight right now and I just don't believe that I am getting that much better protection for that much more money.

My Canadian prices are not likely of any use to you. You can pick up a 4x4L of the Delvac 1 from many heavy equipment dealers. This is how my diesel mechanic friend buys his, originally for his Jetta, now for his '05 Super Duty 6.0L that he just traded the Jetta in on.

I have been thinking that way for years. I would suggest Dino oil in it doesn't freeze where you live . You should unless there is feul dilution get 15,000 miles with dino oil and the bypass.

Yeah, pretty even trade actually. Jetta was a TDI "S" or something; was charcoal, had black leather interior, heated seats....etc. Was an '04 with the Pump Deuce engine. He had put some nice black-chrome 18" wheels on it, HID's and tinted rear tail lights. Car was REALLY sharp.

Truck is an '05 Extendacab Lariat, pretty much same options as the VW inside except it's burgundy on Champagne with tan leather. Thing pulls like a freight-train. 600lb-ft can be a LOT of fun.......

You are not getting a whole lot more protection with syn oils over the dino hdeos. You probably sell the truck before the engine wears out unless it is abused , Look at the uoas.

Steve S - In very high utilisation vehicles there may be a case for a high level synthetic HDEO. It becomes a cost benefit equation in the end. Of course very high extremes of climate (cold/heat) make a synthetic HDEO a good proposition

It is common for Class 8 Interstate trucks here in OZ to experience from say -10C to 45C wihin an 18hr trip! Even then most engines survive well on mineral lubricant changed at the recommended intervals

HEY COWHORSE 01....get on the bandwagon like myself and go to wally world (WALMART) and stock up on Delvac super 15w40 for $9.88 a gallon and live a long life on a PROVEN HDEO that is more cost efficient than amsoil! Yes amsoil will tell you all of this jargon about fuel savings, less friction, fewer oil changes... etc...but it all boils down to their prices skyrocketing over the last year or so....DOES NOT make up for the price of delvac. Also calling their tech dept. is a joke! Dont waste your time on asking them a question on a UOA! Drive hard! -Ponch

cowhorse01, you’ve been a long time Amsoil user and supporter. So I’m assuming you have been buying at Preferred Customer cost, correct?

All motor oil prices are skyrocketing. I’ve been seeing Valvoline and Castrol conventional oils for $4.99 a quart at stores in my area. I know those prices are not the best deals going, but still, all prices are going up, not just Amsoil. Is it really fair to bash one company for this?

According to the August 2008 Amsoil Action News, these are the price increases to distributors of competing oil companies since March 2008:

PetroCanada – 18%
Castrol – 20%
ExxonMobile – 24%
CITGO – 25%
Shell – 25%
Chevron – 27%
ConocoPhillips – 28%

Comparatively, Amsoil, Inc. just raised their prices 12 to 16% in August and only 5% prior to that.

In addition,

“According to Jobber’s World figures obtained from leading auto parts chain stores in December 2005 and May 2008, competitive motor oil quart pricing has increased at an equal or greater percentage over that time period compared to Amsoil synthetic motor oil.” - Amsoil Action News, August 2008

Also, when I had a UOA question, I e-mailed Amsoil’s subsidiary company, Oil Analyzers, Inc. Within a couple of business days I received a satisfactory reply from Ed Kellerman, Manager of Oil Analyzers Inc.

Another thing I often wonder about is what the quality is of the retail oils. An individual from Valvoline said in their testing only 64% of the oils off the shelf actually met API SM spec! 36% of the oils you buy do not actually pass the min. requirements.

Boo hiss. "Retail oils" have been protecting OTR trucks & cars for years now. Look at the UOA section and you will see for yourself that those "retail oils" do an admirable job in wear protection.

Furthermore, how do I know that all of Amsoil's product meets the minimum API spec from bottle to bottle? The 64/36 argument doesn't hold water.

A late thought check the price Schaeffers oil if you feel the need for a super oil.

I work for a manufacturing company that is ISO 9001:2000 certified. From what I know of the ISO certification process, I believe it is good indicator of the quality assurance that goes into a quart of Amsoil motor oil being that Amsoil holds the same certification. Not to say that everything is 100% perfect 100% of the time, but rather vary good precautionary steps set in place to insure the best possible quality.

Can’t find anywhere that Valvoline/Ashland, Inc holds the certification. Schaeffer Manufacturing Company does.

I agreed. My stash of 80+ quarts were bought on sale or clearance + rebate. Chevron Supreme, Havoline Deposit Shield, Valvoline Synpower for $0.49/qt after rebates, Chevron Delo $4/gal and M1 on clearance for $2/qt or BOGO ...

Why pay retail prices when you can buy for a lot less if you have time waiting for sale price or clearance ?

Amsoil is very good, but it is not that good compares with Valvoline Synpower for $0.49/qt after rebate.

errrr, wasn't "bashing" Amsoil......just stating a fact that their oil is getting expensive. My question is simple. Am I getting better protection for the extra 8-10 dollaors over the cast of RTS 5w-40 or for the 15-20 dollars over the cost of a good dino, say, Delvac or Delo? hmmmmmm, bashing? ok......
