Amsoil vs HPL; cost difference worth it?

One of the major differences is Premium Plus does not have any group III, hence the base oils are esters, PAO, and alkylated naphthalene. I am running Premium Plus in my 6.2L Tahoe and the oxidative stability is impressive, the best I have ever tested.
If I went Premium Plus, would I still be smart to use their 5w30 or 0w40 in my Toyota with GDI. How long would you go interval?

Unfortunately, other than Donaldson, who was Amsoil going to contract domestically to make their filters with so many other manufacturer's suffering from buy outs of companies that no longer have pride related to the finished product?
Does it have to be a domestic manufacturer? Why not PGI?

I think most of us would prefer an American company to have their filters made by an American company, such as Fleetguard or Donaldson.
Sure but not at the cost of quality, which it appears AMSOIL did. I was just asking if there was some commitment AMSOIL had made to only use American suppliers or something that I didn't know of.

That wasn't really a decision they made. When they inked the deal with Champ, who was also making the RP filters, this was before Worst Brands acquired them and FRAM and drove them into the ground.

Prior to that, the cans had been hybrids, using Donaldson's Synteq media in cans either assembled by Donaldson or WIX, depending on the part #. I assume the deal with Champ (which downgraded the efficiency a bit, they were 99% @ 15-microns under Donaldson) resulted in a considerable improvement to the bottom line and a greatly simplified procurement process.

Got it thanks.

They might be contractually obligated to stick with them for the foreseeable future.

It wasn’t a quality issue to begin with. It became that. This comment frames it as Amsoil went out of their way to begin doing business with poor quality products. And PGI is becoming domestic, (likely)

Edit: Domestic in footprint, not just made overseas. Even if original a foreign manufacturer, they can begin making products here.

Thanks, yeah I just didn't realize that the filters were good when they signed the deal and then the quality went downhill.

Yeah, it all went downhill once FirstBrands bought Champ labs in 2020, at some point afterwards. Prior to that, in 2019 FirstBrands bought out the ones that owned Fram (RankGroup).

I'm good with 5w30, that's what I run in my Tahoe 6.2L that calls for 0w20. You should not ask me how how long I would go between changes. I have a reputation for making people convulse.

That will be interesting to follow assuming it dilutes oil more than the Pentastar …

I’d personally start with the 5w-30 and get a baseline sample and then 5k and 10K and decide how much farther to take it.

The top line HPL oils have legendary resistance to breakdown and oxidation, but no oil can effectively offset 12% or 15% dilution.

The sampling is important to see how the engine is abusing the oil with various contaminants. That can then inform how long to leave it in.

From the wear metal in the used oil analysis, GM fixed the crank polish problem and this motor will serve me well for lots of miles.
Pleasurable/capable miles I might add - we just traded our 2017 with 115k - good unit - still have the 2022 - owned several since 2005 …

Royal Purple is not exactly on the level of Amsoil and HPL.
I used Royal Purple in our 2002 Honda Accord we owned from new until we let it go in 2020. The car was garage kept and like new in and out with not one engine repair. I got onto Royal Purple after the engineers where I worked changed all of our lubrication of equipment to Royal Purple with the exception of our Cummins Diesel engines which used Valvoline. I felt good about Royal Purple until the company was bought out by some other company. Word got out almost immediately the new owner was prepared to mess with the formula. I heard he was simply a rich buyer with absolutely zero knowledge or experience about what he planned to do with Royal Purple products. Have not purchased any Royal Purple since.
