My wife's car is a 2001 Jaguar S-Type Sport Suspension 4.0 liter V8. This car has a Ford 5 speed (5R55N) transmission.
The transmission specs Mercon V and it is considered a lifetime fill. Also has no dipstick which drives me nuts.
Being the anal retentive type, it bugs me that this was considered a factory fill. I just don't see how Mercon V can be considered lifetime fill when I have or have had other Fords that need Mercon V changes at about 20K or so (regardless of what the manual might say)>
The transmission had 40K on it when I decided to change the fluid and filter.
I ended up going with Amosil Universal ATF in lieu of Mercon V. I chuckled (with joy) when I turned the crank over manually only to discover a drain plug in the torque converter (makes one think... why would they put a drain plug in a trans that is supposed to be lifetime fill).
So, I drained the trans and converter. I don't have my notes in front of me but if I recall correctly I got about 11 quarts out of the trans and converter.
I filled with Amsoil Universal ATF and checked the fluid per the FSM recommendation (after bringing up to specific operating temp).
It's been several months and several thousand miles since I have changed the fluid and I can't believe the difference. There was no real problem before but there was a bit of a bang on occasions going from drive to reverse (I'm told it is common in these transmissions).
Since the Amsoil Universal ATF went in there is nothing but buttery smooth shifting and never a bang. I'm no Amsoil dealer and I'm not crazy about some of their marketing techniques but I must say that they more I use their products the more I like them.
I've used Amsoil Universal ATF on several vehicles now (1/2 dozen actually) and I really like this product a lot. Seems to really be a high quality oil capable of replacing a number of different spec. trans. fluids.
