This vehicle is driven over 25K annually. This is the first run of Amsoil ATF that was put in nearly 2 years ago (DIY full flush & pan drop using return line using approx. 13 qts for a 9.5 qt full capacity change). Extended OCIs are one of my primary reasons for the switch from OEM. 95%+ of these miles are driven on the highway with my daily commute comprised of a 100 mile round trip.

I'm definitely more familiar with engine oil UOAs but this is my first transmission UOAs. I would be forever grateful for your interpretations and comments. This is also my first time using OAI for the oil analysis. Chosen for their familiarity with Amsoil products, plus receiving TAN results (something I'm not familiar with) and just slightly cheaper. Normally I'd use Blackstone for my engine oil analysis.

Around 53K miles now on the fluid, my objective from the original flush was to do a pan drop & filter replacement every 60-70K (OEM spec every 48K under my driving conditions). Is this the right approach?

Thank you in advance.

Code:

Iron 75

Aluminum 6

Copper 29

Lead 17

Tin 1

Silicon 14

Sodium 7

Lithium 3

Boron 58 (Flagged as abnormal for this oil)

Magnesium 2

Calcium 330 (Flagged as abnormal for this oil)

Barium 1

Phosphorus 392

Zinc 17

VIS 100C CS 6.7

TAN 1.52

53K on the fluid. It looks a bit nominal....and I'm not sure why B and Ca are flagged. Pretty standard numbers. Viscosity is unchanged from new fluid. TAN Low. (nice)

How many total miles on the car? Fe is probably just normal wear, with some wear-in from early on in tranny life.

52,587 miles on the fluid / 147,587 on the vehicle.

So would 60K pan drops & filter changes be good from here on out?

Thanks!

This is a great UOA. ~50k miles with total wear
What drivetrain?

Install a full flow ATF filter(like the permacool or racor), and go the full 100k on the Amsoil.

What is the pan capacity vs. total tranny capacity? Knowing this will help you calculate an interval that is less of a hassle. 60k seems reasonable enough for your fluid, your driving style, and your UOA data.

Inspect the old filter when you remove it. You might be better off installing a drainplug and ignoring the OE filter every other 60k partial drain/refill service. Alternate between the drainplug and pan drop for future services.

With that mileage on your vehicle, pay attention to any drivability issues. It would suck to loose the transmission to a bad vehicle speed sensor, tired tranny solenoid, throttle position sensor, ground or wiring harness corrossion........

Contacted my dealer yesterday morning and he told me he would contact the tech department. Here is part of his response,
Quote:
Cory...Your sample is well within spec. The calcium and boron levels which were flagged are well within spec. for AMSOIL ATF. These are normal levels. AMSOIL is having Polaris labs do some of our analysis and they are going through a learning curve about the the AMSOIL additive chemistry.

This sounds very good. I think I'll continue to 60K and do the pan drop & filter replacement followed with another UOA some 50K later.

Love to hear this!

Service Fill = 4.5 qts
Overhaul Fill Capacity = 9.3 qts
as quoted from my Factory Service Manual

Thank you for your comments.

Yea! I can see the Fotki image finally. Nice format. Indeed it looks nice. Total agreement with what I said earlier about B and Ca.

I would bypass the stock transmission cooler in the radiator. Install a transmission cooler in front and outside of the radiator. Then I would put an in-line Magnafine filter on the return line from the cooler to the transmission. I would leave the stock transmission filter on for 100K changing the Magnafine every 50K. Run the Amsoil until the Tan is starting to show some signs of trouble. Configure your OCI around this information.

Separate diff fluid??

1/2 ATF is changed with a pan drop and should be reasonable enough every 60k. Remember to regularly check the ATF level and keep it topped off. Sometimes knowing that you can go 60k without issues might cause you to neglect the dipstick. Unseen leaks suck.

Exactly. A whopping 28 oz. of Amsoil 75W-90

Very good advise. The 300M has an "Autoshift" where I can manually apply the gears. I use this often in town for better MPG. If the tranny is just a few ounces off there are some harsh shift problems usually between 2nd & 3rd.
