how good is this stuff? i was using the ame 15w40 i really liked it, and so did the truck (95 psd). the dipstick fitting on the oil pan started leaking and i was loosing about a gallon a week $$. i switched back to shell rotella t 15w40 and while it still leaks, it hasn't lost enough to be albe to tell on the dipstick. i can't afford to have the pan replaced and don't have place where i can pull the motor.

i want to try amsoil synthetic blend next and see how it does and maybe live with the leak for a while.
so how good is it?
thanks

There really hasn't been much discussion or UOA's on this site about their synthetic blend 15W-40. Much has been discussed of the Schaeffer's 7000 Supreme 15W-40 blend, which looks to be excellant for long drain capability, and from what I gather for around $3 a quart.

Have you checked tsb's or recalls to see if this leak is a common problem? If so, you may possibly get it fixed for free.

The dipstick is seperate from the pan right? If so remove the tube replace seal if it uses on and reinsert the tube.

If the tube is intergral (witch would be verry poor design) and you can not remove the pan to weld use a good epoxy! If it is not structal in any way just leaking you can also use some RTV.

If oil can leak out air can leak in!

there is fitting on the oil pan where the dipstick enters the pan. there's an o-ring on th inside of the pan. it can be replaced w/o pulling the pan but mine was rusted to much and i couldn't loosen the fitting. since dropping the oil pan and replaceing it is the only way to fix it, and to drop the pan i need to pull the engine, i won't be doing until i can beg, borrow or steal a garage. but thanks for the input

The 15w-40 synthetic blend uses a very similar additive chemistry to the 100% synthetic, marine and diesel oil. Extended drains of 60k-80k are possible in over the road trucks, so it will certainly hold up fine.

Sort of like the excellent Schaeffers S7000, 15w-40, I'd say ....

Jarmstrong: That looks like a job for JB Weld. If you can get it clean around the fitting, perhaps with a wire brush & some emery paper, you can probably stop that leak in its tracks!

Good Luck!
