but what is the purpose of the 3-letter designations with all of Amsoil's motor oils? It has always confused me.

Back on topic, I've never heard anything bad about this oil from anyone who's actually used it. I say use it & your engine will thank you.

I also find it odd that Amsoil doesn't have a specified drain interval listed for this oil. I guess they want you to go by whatever your European vehicle's required OCI happens to be.

Way back in the dark ages, AMSOIL came out with their first engine oil--10W-40.
For brevity in use, it was tagged AMO (as in AMSOIL Motor Oil, or Al's Motor Oil).
When new grades were introduced, someone--probably Al--figured out which 3 letters to use.

With over 20 different engine oils now, don't even try to make any correlation between most of them. On the other hand, HDD is Heavy Duty Diesel, AME was originally AMSOIL Marine Engine,

I would say they are on par in a gas engine.

S2K HDD 5W-30 is a diesel oil mainly, and a lot more expensive. It is a 30 for those who don't need a 40. I say the HDD will go longer in an extended OCI.
 
Hey Pablo, can you tell us how this oil is going to change (basestocks and additives) when it's reformulated to also be recommended for VW 505.01 engines? Thanks!
